Rep. Madison Cawthorn polished his pistol for several minutes during a House Veterans' Affairs Committee virtual hearing on Wednesday, according to the Daily Beast.

While veterans and lawmakers discussed how toxic chemicals are killing US soldiers, the Daily Beast reported that the 26-year-old Republican was busy cleaning his gun on the Zoom call.

Update: Fresh off Trump rally, cocaine orgy story, Cawthorn declines April 11 debate

After a turbulent week that included being chastised by party leaders for saying Republican lawmakers were involved with drugs and sex parties and a high-profile speaking engagement with former President Donald Trump, Rep. Madison Cawthorn will not attend the April 11 debate, as previously reported by the Citizen Times.

At the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher, it will be the first meeting of the Republican 11th District candidates since Cawthorn infuriated GOP House leaders with a story about orgies and cocaine use by people he "looked up to" in Washington. It will also come shortly after the endorsement by a powerful police organization of one his challengers, state Sen. Chuck Edwards, as well as Cawthorn's planned speaking engagement in eastern N.C. with Trump, a divisive but still incredibly powerful voice in the party.

Cawthorn spokesperson Luke Ball said there were more than 10 debates scheduled and the congressman had committed to two. He might do "a couple" more but was not planning to attend the Agricultural Center event, Ball said.

"We want to do at least a couple more, and so we're trying to figure out how to balance it with obviously needing to be in D.C. for some things, having to take care of some district meetings and things like that."

GOP officials organizing the event had said they expected all eight candidates.

How recent events involving Cawthorn will play out at the debate and ultimately in the May 17 primary remain unclear. Some candidates have sought to downplay the Police Benevolent Association's endorsement or to criticize Edwards for his ties to established GOP lawmakers. Most challengers, meanwhile, have declined to weigh in on Cawthorn's bizarre and damning drug and sex allegations.

Lots of ways. When I say that collectively America doesn't give a shit about Vets after the SOTU the right spent a week claiming Biden sounded like a gibbering idiot. The left pointed out it was such a strong performance that in the polls even a majority of Republicans, if by a small margin, approved.

Nobody said shit about this. On either side. So when Veteran's day and Memorial day float around and I start ripping into people who don't think I matter 352 days a year and I'd appreciate them not riding my dick for two days this kinda shit is why. Honestly just declare one Avengers Day and the other Justice League Day, we can all dress up, bbq, drink and play football.

I wonder how old her son is. I can't find any info on it other than he appears to be in his teens. But that only helps a little since if I shave and cut my hair so you can't see how far back my hairline has receeded people high me at twenty eight. . .eleven years younger than I actually am.

He hasn't yet, has he? Hasn't he been arrested for this? The difference this time over last is that this time the gun was loaded.

I keep chugging along in the faith that all of these fuckers from Trump on down are going to get rolled up eventually. If not, there's nothing left here to save.

the time before, as i understand it, his gun wasn't loaded but he had a fully loaded clip in his carry-on.

He'd be in jail tonight. He is, however, a member of the U.S. Congress, whether I or anyone else likes that, and there are strong arguments for being very careful about buttoning up a member of U.S. Congress in the short run. We'll see if he's taken to trial over this. The gun being loaded is the most serious charge against him short of the real charge should be that he is an insurrectionist and helped plan a coup attempt against the United States. I think the punishment for that on the books still involves a loaded gun--for a full firing squad array.
