Hello Everyone, ANZAC DAY here in Oz. Sadly no WW1 veterans left and the WW11 vets are very thin on the ground also. Now, mostly Dawn Services around the country.
In times past there would've been thousands of service men and women marching in Sydney [on Anzac Day]. I can remember back in the sixties as a young lad watching the march on TV.....thousands of veterans from the first war and second....there were even a few Boer War vets (in Land Rovers). Time waits for no one.
My grandfather was at Gallipoli and served on the Western Front also. He was gassed towards the end but at least survived. He died before I had an opportunity to talk to him about his experiences and indeed, at the time, I didn't really understand the importance and magnitude of it all. I do now.

Indeed is a day to reflect on those who paid the price for others. Especially given current events in Europe.
I found this day became more nationalistic during the Howard years and more overtly about displays of Aussie pride and draping the flag all over yourself. It's coming back around to being a more sombre and sober remembrance now though and I find that's more in keeping with my own values regarding Anzac Day.
Thanks for the pic drop, any day is a good day with some added Vanessa in it. I'm particularly liking that little four pic collage, she's looking damn good there. I'd love to find her like this.

it is a shame that those who sacrificed so much ,so we can enjoy the freedoms we do, have past. But if they were around now to see what the Russians are doing in Europe, I think they would be ashamed to see how little mankind has learned. We have a long way to go, and I sometimes wonder if we have the time or ability to learn the lessons we need to.

Back in the 70’s I worked with a couple of guys that had been forced Labour on the Burma Railway. Neither would talk about their experiences and both had a fair bit of ‘sick’ days. The bosses used to ensure they didn’t lose out financially even though they exceeded agreed paid sick leave. Both died in their mid to late 60’s from illnesses related to those times.

IMHO we can't thank the vets enough for all they've done.
My father was a WWII vet. When I was a teenager in the 70's, my folks had a cocktail party with several other couples coming over. All the guys were WWII vets. A couple of drinks into it, they started telling "war stories". My mom pulled me aside and pointed out that my dad and one of the other guys weren't saying anything. She said that the guys that had seen real combat *never* wanted to talk about it.
My dad hit the beach at Iwo Jima. The only thing I ever heard him say about the battle was, "it was too bad having to burn them out with flamethrowers"
