Rejected story

We have a 1200 word story that has been rejected (perhaps three times, its really hard to tell). There is not a specific "problem" being flagged but the boilerplate asks if we have "underaged characters" which is perplexing because the story takes place over a few days (perhaps as long as a week). There are only three characters, a husband and wife-- who are said to have met five years previously in college-- and a man the wife is said to have recently met in a community college Spanish language class.

We would be happy to provide a copy of the story to anyone who would like to beta read and see if we are missing something.

Rejections are often triggered by back stories, and sometimes by word choices. If the only back story is after they're eighteen, then make sure the wording isn't ambiguous and resubmit the story with a note to the editor saying what you posted above.

Having a blurb that all the characters are over 18 helps. Also, are the characters midgets?

That exact blurb shouldn't help. Many stories, as already noted, are rejected because of what was put in the backstory. A blurb worded this way doesn't cover for that. The relevance isn't just how old the characters are at the current time of the story.

Beyond that, it isn't a disclaimer blurb that should make a story OK. It's the actual content in the story. You could slap a false disclaimer on a story and I'm sure there are writers who have no qualms about doing so.

On this site, you have to make it clear that the student is eighteen or older. On another site, it's sixteen or older. Ah, on yet another site it's even lower. Nabokov wouldn't get on any of them. Choose wisely.

Having a note in the beginning that suggest the characters are over 18 does help. But also look for keywords and phrases that the admins may look for that may get the story rejected. I honestly don't think they read every story submission all the way through, especially for the long ones. You may not even realize that those keywords or phrases may not look good by their standards, but to them it could be something they need to be concerned about. They do have guidelines to follow and also have toavoid anything that might seem illegal and get them in trouble and possibly shut down.

I had a story rejected for sexual thoughts a character had before they turned eighteen. It's hard to say why your story might have been flagged.

Go with Heyall's offer. An experienced independent eye will likely pick up the issue.

Look for numbers. Any number less than 18? I strongly suspect stories are checked by a bot, macro etc... for certain words/phrases and are rejected. I had one get rejected for underage because of the words pigtails and braces. That was a mom talking about her kids favorite cartoon character. I pasted the quote in comments and it was approved.

If you haven't had it published yet, once you've made the changes suggested, post the link for your revised story on here. I'd be happy to a look, to see if there's anything that still might be raising a red flag. Maybe a few authors could have a look at it, too.

If it's not been accepted, the OP can't give anyone a link.

Any pre-submission review has to be arranged between the writer and an editor outside the Lit systems, using email for communication.

Here are some examples of where underage characters have dealt with the subject of sex and the stories did not get rejected:

My first submission, His Daddy's Car has scenes of teenagers having implied sex while in high school, but it is made clear that they are over 18 at the time. The words "teenager" and "sex" are even used in the same sentence. No rejection.

My story, Little Differences has one character describing her desires for the father of her best friend when she was a teenager, but no actual sex with him until after her 18th birthday. No rejection.

My latest story, Betting on the Aces has two high school teenagers discussing their intentions to have sex once they both turn eighteen. No rejection.

I believe that the feelings expressed by the characters need to be emotional rather than physical, with actions being implied more than graphically described. It has worked for me anyway.

Invariably, when folk come and bitch and moan about this stuff, the problem is in the text they've submitted. The rest of us can get it right, so can you.

You're right. They have nothing but time on their hands running the most popular erotic story site on the net, so they like to fuck around with new authors just for kicks.

Most stories are rejected by a bot that checks for rule breaking text. If you want to write pedo smut go somewhere else, we don't want it or you here.

I've never heard about a ban here on either midgets or dwarfs, as long as they are adults. The dwarfs hired for The Wizard of Oz were pretty wild, from what I've heard. Might be a good story idea in there.

My most squeamish story here (in the sr71plt account)--at least in the writing of it, was about performing midgets. It got posted.
