I would argue that there are a good number of people, at least in the US, who know nothing else about her aside from this rumor and its use in dirty jokes. I would not argue that it has "stained" her legacy for anyone who actually knows the history, but I do think it says a lot about how women who embrace their sexuality have been perceived throughout the past couple centuries, especially women who take positions of power from men.
This. To most Americans, that story is all that would matter anyway. Most of them care more about whatever Tucker Carlson is bloviating about at the moment. But to the almost literal handful of us Americans who care about the actual history, Catherine is seen in a better light.
