I use to play volleyball with a woman from Hong Kong. Always wanted to visit but have not made it there yet. How are things going there?
It’s a rough time there now with covid but it will get better. It’s the greatest city in the world and the people of Hong Kong are indomitable. They will prevail.
In all honesty it's shit, nothing like it once was and very unlikely to ever recover

Why is that? Is it because China is imposing their will on HK or because of the Covid lockdowns or for other reason?
Many reasons mate, obviously started with the riots a couple of years ago, then the start of COVID so regulations in place regarding banned stuff like restaurants in groups etc.
Obviously that was to be expected but it's the ineptitude of the government since, so many ludicrous decisions and of course they are still insisting on a zero case policy which will never happen.
So many restaurants and shops closing, once iconic HK spots like the night markets and Stanley etc are now empty

That is a bummer. Still would like to visit someday but who knows when.
My advice would be honestly don't bother mate, in twenty years time it will be just another Chinese city (which I don't mind) but there will be nothing of interest to see. You would be much better served going to a historical city on the mainland such as Beijing or Xian or Chengdu etc.
