That there is a good chance tht we will be dealing with Putin when all this is done, so how do you get past, politically, the fact that you've called him a thug, a murderer, a Hitler, a madman, etc. and negotiate a deal?

Let others call him that stuff, and it allows you to remain the Good Cop.

I think he does. I think most if not all the deplorables do, though I couldn't explain why.

As for Putin, everyone (or at least everyone who isn't a member of Trump's cult) knows Trump is literally, fundamentally incapable of condemning anyone who he thinks is a fan of his. It's one thing if we're talking about a huge group like the fans at his rallies - then he is able to say, in private at least, how much he hates them - but when it comes to individuals or even smaller but still quite large groups like the January 6 insurrectionists, he just is not able to do it.
