In my job, corporate throws around a saying, perception is reality. Basically what someone perceives must be true. It is baseless, hard to prove and hard to defend against. You can walk into a room of people, don’t say anything or do anything to anyone on purpose, and walk out and you will receive as many different perceptions as there are people in that room. How do you defend against all the “perceptions” that you will get?

Start a roomer about yourself before the meeting (at least 1 day), nothing that has any basis to it and then think of what the perceptions would be. ;)
Now if you sit around and worry about what other people think then you have too much wasted time on your hands. You can only be yourself, prove what you are worth to yourself others will see this and it will change what people think.
Perceptions are judgements, you cannot judge something you do not know you can only guess.

This has been a sissy thought.

No you missed the point. Someone has a perception about you and now you have to defend yourself, kind of like guilty until proven innocent.

Why would you 'need' to defend against anyone in that situation? Ya ain't in prison. Ya just create more stress for yourself, stress kills like a gun --, not as as quickly but dead is dead.

Maybe I didn’t explain it well. This is the corporate culture. That is the statement used. I didn’t say stressed about anything. Just looking for some quick replies when this statement is used.

Walk into the room and say, "I'm going to kick the fuck out of the next cunt that spouts any management speak bollocks".

“Circle back” pick all the “low hanging fruit” in a good way, then throw it all of their corporate faces
🤣

Perceptions are more akin to opinions than they are to reality/truth. The proof of this is; Each person will have a unique perception — truth is static. Basically, what that "saying" is trying to encode is; Perceptions (opinions/judgments) are as valid and important as truth. The best response to something like this is; "That's you're opinon — with which I disagree." Bottom line; this is bull-shit and therefore I'd simply disagree with the corprate culture preacher who's pushing it. It's a ploy to intimidate, etc....

Corporate doesn't believe that any more than it can act on it.
It's just preemptive rhetorical CYA that can mean most anything
in the face of an employees' serious charge against their prevailing culture.

"We're sorry that your perception is that you're not useful to us because you didn't get that raise,
but the reality is that we really want to fire you but hesitate out of fear over some mindless discrimination lawsuit."

I want to thank you all for your input. Just an update; the employee who brought fictitious issues up to my supervisor was brand new and coerced by a more tenured employee whose life sucks due to his bad life choices but blames his coworkers, neighbors, family members, me, work, the weather, environment, etc etc, everyone else but himself. The new employee has been discreetly counseled by another to not listen to him and stay clear because he is toxic.

But I will remember all these wise words should it ever happen again. Thank you all once more.

Its a 'fool's errand' to attempt to 'defend yourself', (your words, correct?..) against someone's preconceived notions of who or what you may be. Plus you make yourself appear weak, tilting at windmills just because what ---, of some intangible someone concocts in their own mind???
