I'm posting this thread to kick off the Letters of Love event which is open to all Literotica writers.

Using a character from one of your published stories, write a love letter. It could be from a main character, side character, or even a character not really involved in the story. The letter could be to their lover, or not! The letter could be set in any time frame—before, during or after the story. It could even be an imaginary letter that's never sent. Remember, these letters need to be from your character—not someone else's!

At the start of the letter, state in an introduction which story inspired the letter.

The letters need to be posted in the Letters and Transcripts section, an oft-neglected section of Literotica that contains some gems.

The Rules are simple
1. The story has to be in the style of a letter
2. It needs to be from a character mentioned in one of your published stories.
3. An introduction needs to indicate which story (or stories) the character appeared in.
4. Any length you like.
5. It needs to be published in Letters and Transcripts.
6. Because this is a challenge, and not a contest, you can enter your letter in the Summer Lovin' competition, but be sure to read the rules of that event.
7. Author must copy and paste the phrase "Letters of Love Story Event" in the "Notes" field of the submission. We recommend that you COPY & PASTE it into the NOTES field to avoid typos.
8. Please use “Letters of Love” as a story tag.

This is an open challenge and any author can submit a letter.

The anthology of letters will be published on Love Note Day—26 September and can be submitted from 1-25 September.

This thread is for any questions, comments or ideas. Now get writing!

This sounds lovely, and if I'll think of something, I'm in. Letters aren't my thing but never say never. There's plenty of time.

A lovely challenge, thanks for proposing this. So many wonderful authors out there in the real world generate correspondence, usually fascinating to read. Writers writing about writing, and here the twist is your characters doing the writing. An intriguing way to develop one (or more) of your character's personality and worldview.

Bonus points: have two characters from unrelated stories write to each other, tying them together in some interesting fashion.

And yes, a vastly underexploited category.

Hey, @SisterJezabel:

Devo and I are IN!

An idea immediately sprang to mine for one of our characters.

The guidelines say to begin with a reference to the story / character that's inspiring the letter.

Would it be okay to avoid direct references to either the story or character until the end, so that surprises or twists aren't "spoiled?"

Ha, I recently featured the song 'Love Letters' by Ketty Lester in a chapter of the Alexaverse.

Well, I have a few established universes inside the larger Hammerverse, so that might be a fun li'l challenge. Finding one character to write a love letter that other people would want to read... hmmmm...

Sounds interesting. I haven't written in the Letters category yet, and I guess it's about time. I don't have an idea yet, but there's plenty of time to come up with one.

Here's a thought: My next 750-word story should post any day now. It's "Getting Too Close -750-words", and it's about an author having an argument with one of his characters (the male) over how the female acts. (Spoiler alert: the author is drunk.)

Maybe a love letter from the female character to her author.

An interesting challenge. Sure, I'll give it a try. I have three or four stories whose characters would work well with this premise.

What a neat idea for an event. I'm not sure if I'll have anything to contribute to this, writing to theme is always tricky for me, but I look forward to seeing the entries.

Hmmm. Interesting concept

One of my early stories had a woman go out with a guy who turned out to be a real arsehole. She flattened him. A letter to him eight years later after their kid was born could be interesting.

I like the concept. I’m not particularly familiar with Letters and Transcripts (other than SJ’s excellent Twister letters), so I don’t know about expectations for that category. Chiefly, can you write a paragraph or two of story at the beginning and end or should the entire story be in letter form? For example, can the character for whom the letter is addressed to be shown discovering the letter before reading, and then perhaps reflecting on the letter at the end? Conversely, can the character writing the letter be shown giving or posting or hiding the letter, in normal story prose before jumping into the letter?

Interesting idea.
I can instantly think of one character who would write a letter, though not particularly erotic.

Another wrote letters in real life but the story was set far enough in the future that mobile phones were available.

I do have emails going back to the 90s which might provide inspiration. Many years of long-distance relationships.

Absolutely! Perhaps a note stating the inspiration is at the end!

Already done with mine. So I have to sit on it for seven months??? :p

I agree with noting the original story at the end. In the case of mine, it would be sort of an obvious spoiler, particularly in the "angst" department.

I love that idea—a letter from a LW character saying they still love the author even if others don’t get them!

I think it’s perhaps better that the entire ‘story’ is in letter form to fit the category.

Great idea, and I know just the character I want to use!

Love the idea. :)
I know just the character.
Not crazy about the category.

I was just reviewing my writing schedule for the rest of the year when I noticed this event, it falls perfectly in a series I'm writing ... A young USAF airman is sitting alone in an empty apartment in German, his bride of 8 months is waiting for the word...

Is it acceptable to write the story in the form of more than one letter?

Is it acceptable to write the story in the form of an exchange of multiple letters between TWO characters from one of my stories?

Is it acceptable for the "letters" to take a modern, digital-world form, such as an exchange of emails, or a chat session, or private messaging? Seems to me it's the same basic idea, and the challenge is the same: telling the story entirely through the form of a person's message to another. The advantage of expanding the form is that it dramatically expands the story possibilities and makes many scenarios more plausible.

I missed this announcement the first time. But I'll chime in and agree that it's a really interesting concept for a story. And I might even have an idea for it...

I recently posted a story that has a last letter, found by a teenager and her dad, in the glove compartment of their car while returning from a long trip. It is from a belated wife and loving mother to the husband. A tear jerker story. I cried as i wrote it! So did another reader as it was read after posting. It's posted in incest so careful and beware of going there!

Would that fit in the event scenario?

Now that I've finished my first epistolary-style story in several years (in journal form rather than letters), I'm following up with a story for this challenge. The letter is referenced in that story and will give the love interest a voice of his own for maybe a page or ten. Seriously, I'm currently at just over 100 words and expect it will be love, bordering on erotic, more than sex. SisterJezabel, thanks for sponsoring this.
