I've read a fair share of fantasy, but I have yet to write any full-blown fantasy stories. I'm daunted by the world-building that is involved. I'm slowly developing a concept for an epic virtual reality/science fiction/fantasy story in which real people are forced to go on an urgent quest inside an erotic fantasy/virtual reality world. It's still in the early stages, however, and I have many more stories I want to write, so I have no idea when I'll get to it in earnest.

I should add that, unlike some fantasy writers here, I prefer to write stories where the sex is central to the plot, rather than incidental, so I'm still trying to figure out how to do that in the context of an epic fantasy story.

Sounds interesting yeah, though I can certainly see wanting to do smaller stuff before taking on a massive project. Once those get going you don't want to quit in the middle...

Interestingly, my publisher once had me take on another author’s fantasy character and had him do mine as a one-off, which sold very well... I did it, but it was hard to make it work for me. I found his character inauthentic. I still haven’t read his take on my character; I find I’m not terribly interested.

Can see that being a challenge yeah, especially if it was an author you didn't have a working relationship with from before. I love collaborations, but they can be a bit nightmarish...I've been wanting to do shared universe projects for a long time, but man it's hard finding people that you really click with.

As for authors that have left an impression on me, I have two short stories that aren't erotic, but I still feel are worth mentioning. One is King Yvorian's Wager by Darrell Schweitzer. It's one of my most favorite stories ever that always makes me a bit emotional. Then there's The Man Who Painted the Dragon Griaule by Lucius Shepard, another strange little tale that nevertheless has a feeling of grandeur.

Hopefully this isn't too niche a thread, but it'd be lovely to get to know other authors who are into the fantasy genre.

One of my works in progress is titled "Celtic Vampiress". Sexy vampires, all of whom are female, a succubus, various other sexy female fae, and a male mage who gets to love several of them. Set in 1st century Ireland and Roman Wales, with various historical characters as well as others who are at least semi-mythological.

Hopefully this isn't too niche a thread, but it'd be lovely to get to know other authors who are into the fantasy genre. Personally, I love fantasy but can't stand most of the big-name stuff anymore. So I'm thinking perhaps there are some gems here?

If any fantasy writers browse these boards, I invite you to share a bit about your worlds (no wiki-length stuff, though ) and the stories you write!

Personally, I've started writing a series called Reina the Warlock (2 parts published, 2 parts pending at the moment). In many ways it's a way for me to practice my writing style and just play around with stuff without needing to feel a lot of pressure about it. At the heart of it is a young Warlock who is bonded for life with a Daemon from the so called House of Flesh, one of the many Houses of the Nether - one that is very focused on the carnal and lustful. As you might imagine, this little couple aren't exactly efficient dungeon delvers, especially when cute assistants and other characters get thrown into the mix.

This all takes place in a remote city on the border of an ever expanding desert, resting under the petrified eye of a long dead God. It is a city borne of secrets, ruined and rebuilt a thousand times, with endless catacombs and tunnels delving into the earth below it. In this sandswept place, an order of Wizards are trying to root out any and all Warlocks, in a misguided attempt to keep city safe, and on top of that, tensions are rising between the different races in the city (But really, it's mostly about Daemon sex). Besides the humans, there are the elusive Moonchildren, the ragged Sandscarred and the Shadowtouched, victims of a dying God's curse - all trying to carve out a place in an ever-changing city.

If you decide to check out my stuff, be advised that there's a whole lot of genderbending and stuff like that.

So, any other fantasy buffs here?

Pepper Winters is writing her first dark romance/high fantasy called "Souls of Sand and Smoke" that I'm very excited for. I feel like you're totally right, big erotica publishers have completely ignored the fantasy genre, but it's finally happening and I'm super excited for it. I haven't published on Literotica yet, but I'm currently writing a couple stories to publish that are almost all fantasy genre. I highly recommend Winter's "Fable of Happiness" series. It's not fantasy, but it feels like a fantasy series and it'll give you a taste of her writing style if you're interested.

I'm personally not a fan of genderbender stories, but if you ever publish anything non-genderbender, I'd love to read it.

Your work sounds fascinating! I love dead gods, genderbending and fantasy cities! Do you have stories on Literotica? I didn't find anything under your name.

I'm Yibala, but I also go by Dominique. Most of my stories here are fantasy in a setting called Jarra that is (so far) inspired by South, Central and Eastern African cultures. But lately, I've been working on sequels to follow my Leinyere event story. I envisioned that one to have more of a Russian or Eastern European geographical home.

Like a lot of others, I was inspired by years of D&D, but also the fantasy writing of Le Guin, Samuel Delaney's Neveryon, and GRR Martin. As someone else mentioned, I was hugely inspired by the Thieves' World series, and all of the classic swords & sorcery by folks like Howard, Lieber and Charles Saunders. I like low fantasy; gritty stuff with political skulduggery and ancient lore, and preferably, women who kick ass.

I have a personal journey around the question of sex vs. plot. I've only written fantasy erotica for about two years - my earliest stuff is mostly here on Lit. But I've written Afrocentric fantasy for much longer. For years, I had this same problem - I couldn't figure out how to write enough sex into the stories to make them erotica.

But actually, writing loads of sex into speculative fiction is easier than writing it into contemporary fiction. As a fantasy author, you can change all the rules of science and nature. I started having 'success' finishing erotica stories once I came up with world-building plot devices that ensured that sex was a central theme in my stories. For example, I have beings that exist in the mythology and religious belief of Jarra that exist only to breed. There are writers on Lit who have developed whole magical systems based on sex. Sex deities, sex cults, reproductive magic, love potions... all you really need to make sex central to your plot is some creativity. My stories are primarily fantasy adventures, and sensuality and sex is just a theme. But you can always ratchet up the eroticism as much as you like.

I don't think you have looked hard enough for these Gosh, the Court books by Sarah J Maas are like Fairy Porn!

There is so much fantasy erotica out there especially if you include urban fantasy I could rattle off twenty authors I love in that genre.

I too have written several fantasy stories. I tend to do the kings/queens wizards/magic type fantasy for the Geek day Author contest rather than the space theme so many do.
The last one was called Warrior if you're interested.

I have two

I wrote two stories that are Fantasy.

https://literotica.com/s/a-reward-from-the-minotaurs is very Dungeons & Dragons like with elves, pixies, minotaurs, humans, trolls, and so on.

https://literotica.com/s/cupid-laughed is much more a Roman mythology related but still involves races like minotaurs, nymphs, humans, and satyrs.

Neither are especially long, maybe 3k to 4k but I like the world-building and I try to create a believable atmosphere in short order.

I've only ever written one real fantasy story, and it's on Amazon in an anthology, rather than here. I really should do more, it's a genre I really enjoy writing.
