Ever Written Anything Prophetic?

Writing many stories set in the past, I often have characters engaging in conversations that foreshadow future events to help set the story in that time frame. As just a few examples, in 'Banging Cousin Becky In Blackpool' which is set in 1955 titular character Becky who is from Liverpool argues with her Aunt Agatha, and asserts that in a few years' time one of the world's greatest bands might emerge from her home city. In 'April Leads Julie Astray' which is set in North Carolina in October 1963, the two girls discuss November being a dull month, April saying to Julie that if in the future anyone asks them what they did in November 1963, they would be sure not to remember. In 'Bridget the Bossy Bridezilla' which is set in Brisbane Australia in 1993, a grumpy Croatian father does not approve of his daughter's love of grunge music, and says that if he made grunge he would get a gun and shoot himself in the head. In 'Janelle & the Janitor' which is set in early 2001, drama queen narrator Janelle laments that if she doesn't make it to the ladies' room soon then the 'biggest disaster of 2001 will take place in her panties'.

While I obviously have the benefit of hindsight as an author to write these scenes, have you ever written a story that seemed to foreshadow a future event that took place after publication? It could be a major or minor plot line, or simply a throw away line, but which seemed somehow prophetic? Not to the scale of early science fiction novel 'Futility' by Morgan Robertson published in 1898 which seems to foretell the Titanic disaster of 1912 with amazing accuracy, but enough to stand out re-reading the story?

I got a comment today on one of my fetish stories 'Spying on a Spoiled Brat' published in early December 2019 and set earlier that same year, where the narrator Steve is a painter and decorator and he and his team are re-painting a posh house in an expensive suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Steve gets a call from one of his team Barry, who has come down with the flu and calls in sick. Steve notes that Barry 'sounds like he has the flu in 1918 rather than 2019', a simple line that could easily be overlooked had this story not been published just a month before the commencement of the COVID 19 pandemic and which now is kind of eerie, like a premonition. I had actually noted this myself, but a reader also picked up on this on their comment.

Have you had any similar experiences?

Yes, I had a Mideast-centered espionage novel published in the mainstream in 1993 in which one of the threads was the assassination in a Tel Aviv square by an ultrarightist Israeli of an Israeli prime minister modeled after Yitzhak Rabin for promoting a peace treaty with Egypt. Two years later Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in a Tel Aviv square by an ultrarightist Israeli for negotiating peace with Egypt.

My story VY seems prophetic with me starting to write it in Sep 2018, and Covid hit everyone Nov 2019, with lockdowns only a few months later.

I took some photos of the Elephant & Castle shopping centre being demolished, including the grafitti-ridden car repair garage under some of the arches behind it, which wasn't owned by the developers who bought the rest of the site. For reference, the E&C shopping centre has been a huge rundown eyesore in South London for at least the last 40 years and for the last 10 hasn't even had the giant pink elephants on its roof. Imagine if you wanted a shopping mall for your post-apocalyptic movie, and there it is.

I commented that the garage would probably last a couple more months before an 'accidental' fire would magically destroy it, as happens to so many buildings where permission to knock them down is denied.

Two weeks later, the garage burns.

And now the arson squad will be knocking at your door...

I have written, back in 2011 a story about the US being invaded by China.

It's called Downfall, and as a follow up I wrote Chicom Invasion back in 2018 then a follow up part Chicom Invasion Pt. 02 just to complete that part of the story.

I am currently in the process of finishing the Future Histories Novel.

These might not be exactly prophetic yet with what's happening in the world and many countries today... it just might be.

Funny you should mention that - as a student, my friends and I were in a town pub, somewhat merry and singing along most enthusiastically to the jukebox. Bouncer comes over and says "I like that song. But not the way you're singing it. Get out and don't come back tonight."

So we left. I got woken up the next afternoon by the police - because yes, there had indeed been an arson attack a few hours later...

In the worst way.

I wrote a long series where at one point the MC's longtime best friend succumbs to addiction and kills herself because she's tried of fighting.

Two years later my best friend going back to middle school who had been drug free for twenty years fell off the wagon, got drunk and blitzed on coke and two days later couldn't live with the failure and took his own life.

Well ...

The best I've ever done was a bar scene with people arguing about NHL hockey.

One of them declared that the two-line pass would be eliminated to speed up the game and allow for more offense and, well shoot, that happened two years later.

Nailed it!

I've written a few reality alteration stories where things get increasingly sexy, generally without anyone noticing.

Hang on, gotta draw the shades and turn off the lights - that roving band of neighborhood lesbians is coming around again!

Back in the early ‘90s, I was commissioned to create a number of scenarios to help the senior management group at a major international airport to think about the future.

One of the scenarios involved a world stricken with a plague. In a matter of weeks, millions of people stopped flying. Airlines went out of business. Hotels and restaurants scrambled to find ways to generate revenue. Airports became virtual ghost towns.

‘Wouldn’t happen,’ I was told.

:)

That's about as prophetic as they get, Sam. Funny how these Black Swan events have a way of turning into reality.
