Citizens of Baltimore are being defrauded and their children are being harmed to the point of having no future in the business world, no way to earn a living except maybe through crime on the streets:

77% Of Students At One Baltimore High School Read At Elementary, Kindergarten Level
By Ashe Schow

More than three quarters of students at one Baltimore high school are reading at an elementary level, with many reading at a kindergarten level.

Fox Baltimore reported that a teacher at Patterson High School, one of the largest high schools in the city, came forward with information showing 77% of students at the schools were found to have an elementary school reading level. Patterson has a 61% graduation rate and a $12 million budget. The teacher has not been identified to protect them from retaliation.

“iReady assessments are given in Baltimore City Schools to help determine at which grade level a student is performing in math and reading. The scores are not made public. If the media requests them, the district will redact most of the results. But Project Baltimore obtained the results for all of the students tested at Patterson High School,” the outlet reported. “In reading, 628 Patterson High School students took the test. Out of those students, 484 of them, or 77%, tested at an elementary school reading level. That includes 71 high school students who were reading at a kindergarten level and 88 students reading at a first-grade level. Another 45 are reading at a second-grade level. Just 12 students tested at Patterson High School, were reading at grade level, which comes out to just 1.9%.”

When Fox asked the teacher how a student with such a low reading school could make it to high school, the teacher said “They’re pushed through.”

“They’re not ready for the workforce. They’re not ready for further education,” the teacher said.

What did the other scores show?

They aren't ready for the work force? They might not be high paying jobs but there is a lot you can do with an elementary level of reading. I may spend the most time here on the Politics board and formerly the General board. Most Americans are roughly at a 5th grade level. Beyond that you are almost always talking about something technical.

Hell of the well written posters you can often tell that we dial it back a notch.

Nobody is going to hire anyone who can not read an employment application, a safety manual, hazard signs, or a labor contract.

An employment application is written at a 5th grade level or well below. Its all, put your name, address, social, sign, sign sign.

I don't think I've ever read the safety manual nor a labor contract in my life. They actually have videos for that specifically because people weren't reading them. Hazard signs are color coded and have pictures. You literally don't read most hazard signs.

ITs also worth noting that reading level is calculated in a very odd way (IMHO) where it doesn't mean they don't have the vocabulary or comprehension skills. Its that people who grew up texting each other instead of reading letter, have voice chats so on and so forth have short attention spans. It would in no way shock me to find out that the Youtube, Tictok generation lack the "Moving watching level" to get through a Lord of the Rings movie. Much less be a straight baws and watch all three in a single day.

So nobody reads safety signs, like "high voltage,Lockout/tagout required before servicing," "safety glasses required," "Restricted Area no authorized entry," "Danger Electric Fence,"in the workplace? What kind of a shithole do you work in? So you don't mind that 77% of a high school graduating class, be condemned to shoveling shit for a living? Fuck the hell off with that apologetic shit. Those kids are being cheated and economically harmed. Only 1.9% are reading at grade level.

Yes, nobody reads a most safety signs. They have bright yellow and black sign with a picture of what will happen. Your hand could get crushed, electricity, hot. Lock out tags also don't require reading. Either you're the one who put there and you should know what's there OR your the technician and it barely applies to you. Also given the nature of your job you probably do read a higher level. Basically all the signs you mention reading have pictures and for a good damn reason.

Again, grade level for America is 5th grade. Anything above and beyond that is mostly a waste of people's time. As is most math not that they bring that up.

77% of students in a single study (though I wuold guess that number is close to right stretched over a decade) at a single school doesn't piss me off but so much. There is a reason why the article focuses on a single school. Not a city, county, state or ultimately most importantly a national level of reading.

The kids are only kinda being robbed. This goes back farther. Wanna lay odds that high school is in a poor, quite probably minority (black would be the best guess.) If they are graduating now they are kids of some combination of Gen X and Millenials. So these kids are one generation removed from their parents getting a shit education under Separate but equal. Less than that from the drug wars (still ongoing) and the pro-work mentality where a family with an able bodied male are highly limited in the welfare programs they can apply for. All these things add up for obvious reasons.

At the end of the day "shoveling shit" is something that needs to be done. They call those people essential workers. Someone needs to work in the warehouses, on the docks. Someone has to work at Walmart. Someone has to do the landscaping and be security guards, serve in the military, build and maintain the roads. I could go on and on there.

Ultimately no, I don't find it acceptable that 77% aren't reading at a higher level at that particular school. There are lots of things I would focus on before that though like a more thorough and different way of teaching history. We can see by what people vote, attribute to the Constitution and or Founding Fathers that we are sending people off to vote with no accurate knowledge of where we are and how we got here. And the anger over CRT stems 100% from the people who run things knowing they won't benefit from the truth coming out.

Again, grade level for America is 5th grade. Anything above and beyond that is mostly a waste of people's time. As is most math not that they bring that up.

This is why what you say carries little weight with real educated people. That is a 100% full of shit statement. That might be how it is in your demographic which is a thin slice of America.

This is flat-out criminal what is being done to these kids, and what does the Left do? Defends it. DEFENDS IT.

It's tragic, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching. They are condemning generations of inner-city kids to lives of ignorance and poverty. To say this is a disgrace is an understatement.

BUT! The schools need more money. THATS the REAL issue! 🙄🙄

What's your solution?

What's your solution?

The Bud Spencers of the world have no solution. Feasible solutions, anyway ("privatize errything" is not feasible).

The Bud_Spencers of the world are content to gnash their teeth, clutch their pearls and blame Democrats for any and all misfortunes in life, whilst motioning for their fainting couches.

Sorry, I lowballed a bit, but when you look at how reading level is described it has to do with the number of words in a sentence, sentences in a paragraph kind of shit. Which is precisely why I compared it to a movie. Its about being able to slog for long periods of times. It doesn't have much to do with your comprehension or vocabulary.

There is a state by state breakdown if you like.

The reason I'm not taken seriously is because I'm posting gifs, or chasing you in circles with told you so or endless insults. You guys, like the people who watch Fox are here something I'm not. Entertainment. I deal in facts will admit when I'm wrong, do research without being hounded. Integrity is one helluva drug. You should try it.

We can't afford jail for all the criminals in government. Reforming the education system into something that works could take decades, like making the current mess took decades. A big part of that mess is the belief in efficiency. Schools became huge for efficiency, and now they're designed and operated as prisons, with less teaching and more administration. Some reform may happen automatically as energy becomes more expensive, forcing schools to downsize and decentralize into many smaller schools closer to kids. Teachers may be self-employed in their own homes or any available neighborhood space.

Wait, wait wait. I thought that people are the masters of their own fates. Baltimore is 62% African American. But you've been absolutely right that systemic racism, historic racism don't exist. You can't have it both ways.

The Left is not defending it. But you don't beleive its gutwrenching because you don't believe in CRT which explains exactly how schools like that happen.

Low poverty and high literacy was briefly possible in the industrial age. We are starting the transition back to an agricultural economy. We may eventually have 90% poverty and 90% illiteracy. Kids then are more likely to learn practical skills like farming, hunting, making their own clothes, etc.

You're defending it, fuckstick. Te Identity Left got everything it wanted in Baltimore: Black teachers, black administrators, black school board, black mayor...everything it said kids needed to learn. Well, guess what? They aren't learning anything.

This isn't "systemic racism," it's plain old incompetence, delivered up by the Democat Party.

I'm quite sure that if the government throws another few billion at the problem, high school students might eventually be able to attend in person classes. If they wear a mask over their faces to hide the embarrassment that is.

States have education standards and federal guidelines for building schools, funding schools, teacher qualifications, hiring standards, attendance standards, scholastic standards, inspection, and testing standards to prove the efficacy of the foregoing, and grading standards. So we know that somebody has not done their duty. Somebody employed to do so has not maintained those standards to the point of fraud and personal harm to their citizenry. All of these people are getting paid, no doubt their fringe benefits have been on a steady rise all the while their product has diminished to criminal levels. There needs to be a criminal investigation of all involved. Public officials who have failed need to be prosecuted and sent to jail. The public has been victimized by an ongoing scheme to defraud the public.

Nobody is going to hire anyone who can not read an employment application, a safety manual, hazard signs, or a labor contract.
We’ve seen quite a few folks who either don’t read or can’t abide by Terms of Service. What can we infer from that?

Name a teacher at the school who doesn’t have a certificate. I’ll wait….

You’d have to show that they asked for and got all those things. And after that it still wouldn’t explain you moving the goalposts.

No, its systemic racism and we didn't get anything we wanted. Do you really go out of your way to not understand how things work?
