Black Lives Matter shut down online fundraising Wednesday night after attorneys general in California and Washington state demanded the group submit delinquent financial disclosures for 2020.

The Washington Examiner reported that Black Lives Matter halted online fundraising Wednesday.

"We take these matters seriously and have taken immediate action," a Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (BLMGNF) spokesperson told FOX Business Thursday. "We have immediately engaged compliance counsel to address any issues related to state fundraising compliance. In the interim, we have shut down online fundraising as we work quickly to ensure we are meeting all compliance requirements.

The Examiner on Tuesday published a letter – dated Jan. 31, 2022 – from California Attorney General Rob Bonta informing BLMGNF that it was prohibited from soliciting or disbursing funds due to its failure to submit an annual report for the 2020 tax year as required of charitable trusts. Bonta threatened to hold individual leaders personally liable for late fees.

According to the outlet, Washington had already ordered BLM "immediately cease" all fundraising activities there on Jan. 5.

Black Lives Matter shut down all of its online fundraising streams late Wednesday afternoon, just days after California threatened to hold the charity's leaders personally liable over its lack of financial transparency.

The move comes less than a week after a Washington Examiner investigation found that BLM has had no known leader in charge of its $60 million bankroll since its co-founder resigned in May. California and Washington recently ordered BLM to cease all fundraising activities in their blue states due to the failure of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, the legal entity that represents the national BLM movement, to report information about its finances in 2020, the year it raised tens of millions amid the racial protests and riots that followed George Floyd's killing.

"We take these matters seriously and have taken immediate action," an unidentified spokesperson for the BLMGNF told the Washington Examiner. "We have immediately engaged compliance counsel to address any issues related to state fundraising compliance. In the interim, we have shut down online fundraising as we work quickly to ensure we are meeting all compliance requirements."

The donation button that used to be featured prominently on BLM's website was nowhere to be found as of Wednesday evening.

The California Department of Justice told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday that "BLMGNF is prohibited from soliciting donations so long as its status is listed as delinquent."

A Black Lives Matter activist has been jailed for six years for trying to register to vote even after authorities told her she could.

Pamela Moses, a BLM community activist and former Democratic candidate for mayor in Memphis, has said that she had done everything she needed to do to regain her right to vote in Tennessee.

She had a long list of felony convictions, including tampering with evidence, leading to her right to vote being revoked. She has said she didn’t know she lost the right to vote when she pleaded guilty.

But Criminal Court Judge Mark Ward appeared to be frustrated by this defence, saying that she had intentionally misled probation officials to get her voting rights back.

“You tricked the probation department into giving you documents saying you were off probation,” Judge Ward said in the courtroom.

Black Lives Matter drops from ActBlue following Washington Examiner exposé

Black Lives Matter's fundraising pages on ActBlue were deactivated Friday, a day after the Washington Examiner exposed that BLM was still accepting donations on the Democratic platform despite claiming it had stopped amid questions about its finances.

California and Washington state ordered BLM in January to cease soliciting contributions in their states until it discloses its finances for 2020, the year it raked in tens of millions during the nationwide unrest prompted by George Floyd's killing at the hands of police. BLM said Wednesday it had shut down online fundraising while it sorts out its compliance issues, but the group continued to accept charitable contributions through its ActBlue fundraising pages as recently as Thursday afternoon.

"You have attempted to make a contribution to a fundraising page that has no active recipients: either the page's owner has removed all committees or organizations from the page, or we have concluded processing contributions for these committees or organizations," BLM's two ActBlue fundraising pages now state as of Friday morning.

The ActBlue pages were shuttered less than a day after an unidentified BLM spokesperson claimed Thursday afternoon that the pages were"not active" despite the fact that the pages had continued to accept charitable contributions for BLM into the evening.

BLM is currently out of compliance in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia, and Washington state due to its failure to report its 2020 finances, which were due to the IRS on Nov. 15.
