More likely, the bank was skittish about handing a personal check over $10k due to overweening federal law enforcement surveillance. We're regulars at our branch, occasionally handle checks and cash on that scale, and are always given te third degree when we go to deposit or withdraw that amount.

This story is a bit odd.

The Washington Post picked it up and added some salient details.

This woman, a young MD, walks into a random bank and tries to deposit a $16,000 check. I know the threshold is $10,000 CASH for triggering a Treasury Department form, not sure what it is (if any) for newly deposited checks.

Anyone who has ever deposited a large check (not you BoBo) knows that a bank will put a longer-than-average hold on a check that is over a certain limit.

Methinks said Doctor wanted to cash out part of her newfound booty, and the bank wouldn't let her...they had NO existing relationship with her, remember.

Plus the story is a bit hazy on the details...she was "denied services"...what sort of services?

This was a Texas bank, though, so anything goes. When I arrived in Houston a decade ago, I decided to buy a new car. Despite making more in a year than BoBo has made in his entire life and a FICO score Que can only dream of, I was told I needed "addtional collateral"....huh? the car is the colllateral, Mr. Banker. Oh you're "too new to Texas", we require you to have *drumroll* 200% collateral, you can do that by purchasing a CD from us in the amount of the car...

Fuck "keeping it local". I went online and had a loan approval in 10 minutes.
