If the same immigration pressure were coming from the northern border instead of the southern.

We all know why, and it's not because Canucks speak English.

Of course we would.

Because some of us aren't open borders lunatics. :D

No, we wouldn't. Because we are racists.

Maybe you're racist. America is one of the most welcoming countries in the world. You don't hear very many people talk about curtailing legal immigration which comes from everywhere in the world.

Maybe its because the problem isn't at the nothern border? You do realize that people of all complexions come across that border right?

I think you are projecting your racism onto other people.

Nothing is preventing putting a wall on all borders.....except the lack of effectiveness, of course.

Truth be told, the Canadian government is much more stable than the Mexican government. And Canada does not have even more unstable countries on the opposite side of their country which are experiencing an exodus of people fleeing for their lives.

One might recognize that this would result in more valid asylum cases, but letting people claim asylum (as recognized by international law, which we signed on to) these days is described by some as "open borders".

There is always an opportunity for any administration and Congress to put a priority on reforming the asylum process as well as the process for filing for emergency relief. Both parties are far apart on how, and I think the right gets more bang for their buck by chanting "open borders" because their base doesn't care that there aren't open borders or is much more slanted towards the lack of objective reality as well as ignorance of nuanced policy decisions

Or we could just observe and enforce the laws as written, right?

The US should take Canada's immigration laws and adopt them as our own.

Jesus, you can hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth already.

We do that already. When someone crosses the border, and we catch them, they can claim asylum and we then give them a trial. There are laws that address safety of human beings which are also being followed that may supersede others.

Just blanketly saying "enforce the laws" is an oversimplified political maneuver...just as "open borders".

No we don't. International law is that the asylum seekers MUST apply at the first border crossing and that is Mexico, not the US. The Biden admin is trampling both international and US law.

I believe (but not positive) they have to seek asylum from the first country they enter. You can't traverse the entire central America just to get to the US to ask for asylum..

That's not what international law says. and it isn't what the US law says

To obtain asylum through the affirmative asylum process you must be physically present in the United States. You may apply for asylum regardless of how you arrived in the United States or your current immigration status.

In accordance with Article 31 of the 1951 Convention, States parties provide in their domestic law that an applicant’s irregular entry (i.e., without an entry visa or other documentation) will not have a negative effect on the asylum seeker’s application.

Soooo Albert Einstein should have sought asylum in....Poland? Russia? Switzerland?

Immigration isn't a problem if no one gave them a job. Punish those that hire...not those trying to feed their families

No proposal to build a wall on the northern border, or find and deport illegal Canadians, would get any political traction.

Irrelevant deflection.

Speak for yourself, racist.

Maybe you're racist.

That's a confirmed fact.

LOL....we could adopt those laws but (D)'eez would still do everything they could to undermine them since they can't get what they want honestly through legislation. :)

Whether or not America is welcoming has absolutely nothing to do with if we are racist or not. Which we are. ITs kinda that damn simple. I'm not even perfect on that front but as a country we are pretty bad.

You know Biden is actively fighting to keep the draconic laws of immigration in place right?

No, I'll speak for America on this one and lets face it, I recognize race. You're a bigot. And it shows.

D's don't undermine laws. We're simply to straight laced for that.

Why not both? First because just focusing most, if not all energy on just one thing would be so much more effective. The real answer however is that going after employers would affect white people, and well to do ones at that which is simply unnacceptable. Goth is playing his "why not both" as if he doesn't recognize the problem. He can claim all he wants that HE PERSONALLY isn't racist and still acknowledge why this specific problem persists. He won't for the same reasons he never answers anything else directly. IT would mean admitting there is a problem and a more ideal one. But bigots have to be bigots and go after the pidgeons not the asshole feeding them in the parking lot.

To the contrary, curtailing legal immigration is exactly what FAIR demands. And it was founded by white supremacist John Tanton. This represents a significant current in the American RW.
