Ancient Juniper Trees Illegally Cut in New Mexico Monument

El Malpais National Monument

Officials said the trees that were cut down were likely hundreds of years old.

The illegal harvest of alligator junipers affects biodiversity within the monument
and officials said the area will take many decades to recover.

Hacking full grown cactus to death, inside the borders of national parks.
(The theft of giant cactus ended because of micro-chips installed)

"Disappearing" (killing and illegal sales) of buffalo and wild horses.

Greed, Sickness of Acquisition Fever, Hatred, and Pointless Destruction.

US Forest Service reports of vandalism of Native America heritage sites.

Trump's border fence campaign caused destruction that cannot be repaired or replaced.

And why would anyone cut juniper trees? Is their wood worth something?

AFAIK, the only practical use for juniper is berries to flavor gin.

Hmmm...

For years the FS has said juniper and pinyon were invasive and non native.

But if it works for a political narrative, ok. Thanks Vera!

Your ignorance is on display every day. Has been for years.

Tell us about your black friends, peckersniffer.

Why would anyone steal a cactus?

Plants are valuable.

People spend big bucks on them every day.

Yes.

Theft I understand.

The vandalism though is just a shame, and is indeed just fuckery.

Wildlife officials move to feed Florida’s starving manatees

December 7, 2021

A record manatee die-off in Florida this year has become so dire that federal officials
are taking a once-unthinkable step — feeding the wild marine mammals to help
them survive the winter.

Manatees rely mainly on sea grass, beds of which have been smothered by pollutants
along with outbreaks of red tides and toxic algae blooms intensified by climate change.

While boat strikes have ranked as the main cause of death among Florida
manatees, starvation outpaced boating accidents in 2021.

Starving because of pollution -- doesn't really come under the same heading as vandalism in a national park. The latter is fuckery, the former simply lack of foresight.

Four selfish people damaged 4,000-8,500 year old petroglyphs
by scratching their names and a date into the rock panel.

This happened in Texas.

The rangers at Big Bend National Park found the vandalism.

Just when people are making a great effort to document ancient art, these selfish jerks
damaged a priceless artifact until it could not be restored to resemble the untouched
state.

Some Florida lawmakers want to make it easier to destroy life-sustaining seagrass.
Why?

Supreme Court agreed to hear another environmental case with major ramifications.

On Monday, SCOTUS announced it had added Sackett v. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) to their docket for next term. The case dates back to 2007, when the
EPA blocked Mike and Chantell Sackett from building a home on a parcel of land
they bought near Lake Priest, Idaho, because it contains federally protected wetlands.

The lengthy court battle culminated in a 2012 Supreme Court ruling siding
unanimously with the Sacketts—but only about a compliance order issued
by the EPA. The lawsuit is moving forward, with a new focus on the scope
of the Clean Water Act and the 2006 case Rapanos v. United States, which
failed to produce a majority decision more explicitly defining what bodies
of water the Clean Water Act encompasses.

As it stands, the Clean Water Act covers “navigable waters” known as
“waters of the United States,” a loose definition that is up to the EPA
to enforce.

The EPA issued a compliance order that stated the Sacketts must undo the work
that affected the wetlands or face fines of up to $32,500 per day.

The Sacketts asked for an administrative hearing, but the EPA denied that request.

They then decided to sue the agency, arguing that the EPA was arbitrary
in their enforcement and that they were denied procedural due process.

The legal team supporting the Sacketts in that lawsuit work on behalf
of the Pacific Legal Foundation, a group notorious for anti-environmental
litigation and partially funded by the Koch brothers and Exxon

The Sacketts have been stubbornly locked in an anti-environment battle ever since.

and the buyers just said "fuck it" ? Smells like a toe in the water, for a "test case."

For centuries, the Sámi people have herded reindeer throughout northern Europe.
Now, warmer winters are turning the snow the reindeer dig through to find food
into ice, blocking their only source of sustenance.

Nearly every adult in America, and their children, or fur babies, have a motor vehicle.
Granted, a minor number of them run on batteries. The promises made in the 1990s
to supply convenient transportation that does not pollute, has fallen short.

Irritable egos are buying up huge vehicles, that they drive to buy coffee drinks and groceries,

It does not help, that America's billionaires are seeking to create an amusement park
based on burning fuel, in order to launch past Earth's atmosphere.

Then I guess the Sami will have to hack through the ice with axes.

Butterfly center that fought border wall temporarily closes after staff attacked by extremists

January 28, 2022

The National Butterfly Center near Mission, Texas, released a shocking statement
this week, announcing it would be forced to shut down for the weekend due to
credible threats. “We simply cannot risk the safety and lives of our staff
and visitors during this dangerous time,” the organization said
in a statement Thursday.

You may be asking yourself what in the world anyone could have against a butterfly center.

Well, the organization is located along the Rio Grande and has spent years fighting
the previous administration on border wall construction.

It fought the corrupt, privately funded border wall, too.

(Artifical borders do not mean much to animals, birds, and butterflies - until Trump's
"fence" interfered with food, shelter, fresh water, escaping predators, reproduction,
raising offspring.)

It’s since become a target of the right, now, unfortunately, closing for the weekend
due to a MAGA-related rally scheduled to take place nearby. But there’s more.

The email said a Virginia candidate arrived at the center with someone who claimed
to be Secret Service and demanded access to the property, apparently enraged over
a conspiracy theory that the center is aiding in human trafficking.

When the center’s staff demanded they leave, the email said the candidate tried
to run down director Marianna Treviño-Wright’s son in her vehicle.

Trump's Goons and Gremlins take their Political Fantasy Game Too Far

A Texas butterfly sanctuary that sued to block border wall construction has been
forced to close due to escalating threats from conspiracy theorists.

The sanctuary is home to over 200 species of butterfly, as well as bobcats,
armadillos, coyotes and tortoises. It attracts more than 35,000 visitors each
year, including 6,000 school children.

4 February 2022

The move comes after an emergency three-day closure over the weekend,
sparked by a nearby rally over border security called We Stand America.

One week before the rally, two women showed up demanding to
"see the rafts with the illegal crossing", the centre said in a statement
last week.

They said that one person struck National Butterfly Centre executive director
Marianna Trevino Wright and nearly ran over her son with their vehicle.

The conspiracy theory surrounding the butterfly sanctuary recalls the false claims
(made) back in 2016 that a Washington DC pizza parlour was running a child abuse
ring for top Democrats. A man who believed in the wild rumours fired a gun at the
restaurant, but no-one was injured.
