The federal government has quietly launched its website to sign up for free Covid-19 tests, allowing people to order a maximum of four tests shipped directly to their household.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed Tuesday that the government website to order free Covid-19 tests is up and running as part of a "beta phase" ahead of the government website's formal rollout Wednesday morning.

"COVIDtests.gov is in the beta phase right now, which is a standard part of the process typically as it's being kind of tested in the early stages of being rolled out," Psaki told reporters at the White House. "It will officially launch tomorrow morning."

Given the formal launch wasn't expected until Wednesday, a White House official said this is only the beta phase to ensure the site works seamlessly.

You betcha....they are gonna need them out west. It's slowing down here in the East... middle of the Country is in for some serious stuff.

A friend of mine texted me about the ease of getting test kits. I'm missing something. Why are test kits suddenly shit of a stick? I've got the vaccinations and the booster, why do I need a test kit?

Many reasons....if you live with someone who is immune compromised testing folks before they come inside the residence is important at further decreasing risks.

No matter if you are fully vaccinated...some percentage chance still exist that you could get it and pass it on.

It's a good step, but I would prefer they bunch the kits with a 10-pack of free N95 masks as well.

If you know, you're less likely to pass asymptomatic infections to others, especially if you know you will be around those with higher risk of severe illness (older family, friends..etc)

You've been saying that for about 2 years now.

When is it going to get serious???

Yeah, if you ever left your Kasinski Cabin you might understand.

Try visiting your local hospital....just ask them.

Fuck all Republicans. The only good ones are dead ones. Let them die. The World is better off.

Why? Can’t think of a logical, well thought out reason to get them. Literally makes no sense! But if you’re a pussy and afraid, order away!

there, there, buddy, no one expected it of you so you can relax

unless you are living in a vacuum, it's still possible for omicron to catch up with you. While it may result in only mild symptoms, or even be asymptomatic for you, it still has the potential to be transmitted to the unprotected or compromised.

If you might be planning on attending a new baby's christening, or visiting with elderly relatives, or other people you know like folks undergoing cancer treatments (or other medical issues that suppress the immune system), it is a good idea to check you are not contagious.

of course, 4 per household (as the beta site will allow you to order) is a spit in the wind but it IS a start. The beta site mentions nothing about N95s but i believe they are in the works, too, but i don't know when they will be a part of the ordering system.

it's just one step further toward protecting others, even as covid surges in some areas and declines from the peak in other areas. A positive test would indicate the need to self-isolate. It's also a way to protect yourself should you start feeling symptoms... a positive test result likely means you need to call your doctor to ask about getting a more reliable, indepth test. If that comes back as a positive, you'd be better fixed for getting treatments to help if they are needed, since they work better when started within a few days of infection.

it's in the works, though i don't know exactly how soon they'll be available or how many. We know they can be worn more than once, just ask all the nurses who had to re-use them over and over during 2020 :(

The test kits are meant to start shipping end of January, so perhaps the masks will be an integral part of the orders by then.

unsurprisingly for a beta test site, it's experiencing a few problems: people from multi-residence buildings (apartments etc...,) are sometimes finding their order can't be taken as someone else from the same building has already ordered and it's limited to one order per household. There is a hotline, apparently, to call if you are having any trouble placing your order.
