How did this ridiculous meme get started?! It's about on a level with the John Birch Society calling Eisenhower a Communist!
Yes, the Birch Society also called Mandela and anyone who supports him Communist/Socialist.
But given the scale of the anti-Communist victory, wouldn’t it be more in tune with the moment for conservatives to be magnanimous, and say: you know, it’s entirely understandable why the ANC sought Communist support. Indeed, it’s entirely understandable why many groups fighting oppressive structures and regimes accepted or even sought the support of Soviet-backed groups during the Cold War. What looked like the most important moral question from the perspective of Washington would not have looked like the most important moral question from the perspective of Transkei, or any number of other places. So maybe, now that the Soviet Union is dead and buried, we should stop harping on ties to Communists as some kind of unforgivable sin, in this case and in general.
I think the part you're missing here is the campaign money being funnelled through Chinese owned or affiliated companies. That's how a country can influence politics without really being fingered

I'm sure those amounts must be trivial compared to the dark money that comes from American corporations.
It got started, dummy, with an assessment of the Intelligence community. It was the reason why Pompeo called a meeting with every US state governor a couple of years ago to warn them of the CCP infiltration into multiple levels of our society. Like in the education, local government, and business sectors. You of course were too busy spreading Marxist ideology, promoting wokeness, and theorizing about both from within clouds of Marijuana smoke.![]()
The CCP has purchased "tools" all over the US spectrum. From local politicians to some in high office. Univ. researchers, industrial CEO's, engineers and researchers across a vast array of targeted sectors.
Some of these "tools" don't even know they're tools. They are funded through a variety of organizations that receive funding from other organizations. Multiple 'cut-outs' in the business of purchasing influence and technological/industrial secrets.
Whereas the USSR was surreptitious (and cheap) having to recruit on ideological grounds, China uses brute force in the form of dollars. People that don't understand or believe this are not just naive, they are dangerous in their own right.
What reason do you have to believe any of this?
There are many tools in American politics. The CCP and the local billionaires pay the same rate for tool rental.
The high point for the American Communist Party was the presidential election of 1932, when the Communist Party candidate won 103,307 votes.

In the 1936 presidential election that declined to 79,315 votes.

In the United States there was never a remote chance that the United States would somehow "go Communist." The danger was of a nuclear war that would end civilization.
During the Cold War Republicans used the imaginary threat of Communism to discredit the Democrat Party, and the democratic left in general.

When Bobert opens here mouth it's because she is used to what usually is placed in it. She knows what she is good at.
An important thing to remember is that there is no longer any Communist International, nor anything else that could fairly be characterized as an international Communist movement. The CCP only cares about China. It is not interested in stirring up Communist revolution anywhere else.
