I blame the fact that a number of historical advantages have stopped working for the United States. At the end of the Second World War half the world's industrial goods were manufactured in the United States. The United States produced half the world's gross domestic product (GDP). We exported quite a bit more than we imported. This was not because of the "better trade deals" Trump raves about. It was because the rest of the world wanted to buy products that said "Made in USA."

Currently Japan produces consumer goods that are better than ours, but cost no more. China produces consumer that are as good as ours, but less expansive.

America's best years are in the past, and there is nothing that can be done about it.

Republicans are at an advantage, because Republican candidates can appeal to the hostility most lower income, poorly educated whites feel for non whites. The Democrats cannot do this, because the Democrat Party is multi racial. The Democrats could appeal to resentment for the rich, but the leaders of the Democrat Party are rich themselves.
