My eldest daughter is a private teacher coaching children through examinations and particularly working with 'challenging' kids. She likes very modern music that her pupils enjoy. For Christmas and her birthday she gives us a list of CDs she wants. We have never heard of any of the artists who tend to have a small following in the alternative London scene.

We go into the music store and hand over her list. The shop assistant is usually startled that pensioners should want such obscure artists. Usually at least three-quarters of the list has to be ordered specially for her from small companies who specialise in 'grime' and 'garage' - whatever they are. I'm not even sure that she hasn't moved on from those.

But the music store assistants know us and that whenever we walk in they will face a real challenge to meet my daughter's requests. Now when ordering for us, they tend to order additional copies because they know that in about three to six months' time the artists' fame will have extended to the local teenagers.
