In "A Christmas Carol," Bob Cratchit's family has a roast goose for Christmas dinner. This appears to be a British tradition.

But not in the U.S. I've never eaten goose in my life, never even seen a cooked goose.

Why is that?

Geese are seen here in the US as being akin to pigeons- literally "Rats with wings," dirty, poopy, garbage-eating pests whose only purpose is to swarm all over parks and lawns and turn them into vast goose toilets.

Many people I know around here actually refer to them as "$hit birds." So, the thought of cooking and eating one doesn't sound at all appealing. Even though I've heard they actually taste allright, though I'd assume you would want to hunt one in the wild that isn't too near a large city or town.

America is weird about the animals it chooses to eat. You know how some traditional delicacies and high-end foods came about, like lobsters? Lobsters used to be considered dirty because they're bottom-feeders. Poor people were eating them in cheap abundance. Then rich fuckers realized they could make money off them instead of letting poor people have an accessible food source and boom, now lobsters are pricey and seen as hoity-toity meals for the elite.

We (over here in the Tri-State) actually have to put down the geese that flourish near the airports because they will fly into the turbines and fuck shit up. You'd think instead of wasting them it'd make perfect sense to eat them.

Basically they're just bigger ducks. And ducks are another thing that used to be cheap and nothing special to eat before they weren't anymore.

Who would leave green slimy shit all over the sidewalks if we ate the geese?

I'm sure there are places in the US that does serve it, but I think it's just one of those things that just hasn't caught on here.

.....

i don't know about geese but several years ago i made a duck for christmas. i threw up and had diarrhea for 2 days. i can only imagine that geese are similar. they're sort of like eating solid castor oil.
also, i once visited a friend in kansas who had a flock of geese on his farm. as soon as i pulled up and got out of the car those fuckers started pecking at me and i wound up climbing on top of my car to get away from them. geese are evil.

You live a sheltered life.

Cuz that's fuckin Tom's wingman, hellooooooooooo!!!

Turkey is a very bland meat though. I've never been a fan.

They haven't been genetically modified for mass production like turkeys have.

I have eaten muskrat...it wasn't my favorite...but it wasn't anywhere near as shitty as I expected it to be...so that proves if you know how to cook it....anything can taste good. Goose is greasy...far more than duck...which I will cook simply for the duck fat. Best fries ever.

This actually plays a large role. Geese take a larger footprint and have a higher food conversion than ducks. So the money isn't there. Never will be.

I agree. But they do make good lunchmeat.. Grind everything up. Run it through sieves. Add flavoring...extrude it. Presto

Most British people now eat Turkey or chicken at Christmas. Goose is eaten rarely but is a great alternative.

But the roast potatoes that go with Turkey? Cooked in Goose fat.

Few people have actually eaten a turkey. A real turkey, not that FrankenBird that comes frozen and wrapped in plastic.

Roasted potatoes are for every day. For days that require turkey, or duck or goose... mashed with cream cheese, butter, milk, sour cream and then baked.

I have. I had to chase it and wring its neck.

There's a logical explanation.

We are a capitalistic society.

We do not want to eat a goose that potentially could lay a golden egg.

Current price: $1,632/troy oz.

The hardest part of eating a wild turkey is picking the #7 shot out of it.

#7?

I've taken wild geese and they're okay. No corn fields around here for them to fatten up on.

Otherwise, goose that comes from the butcher is great eating.

We raise a few geese for eating. When cooked right, they're delicious, and you get a bonus of a nice container of goose fat. They're a royal PITA to clean, but fortunately there is an nearby Amish place where you can take a goose in a cage and get a perfectly cleaned goose properly chilled in a plastic bag an hour later for $4.

The first time I ate goose was when I was at my company's facillity in the Netherlands. A Dutch colleague invited me to help him and his wife sail a 10 meter cutter rig through the canals from Warmond to the Markermeer over a weekend. I only speak English and enough Spanish to get by, my friend speaks Dutch, English, German and French, and his wife only speaks German, yet we still managed to efficiently run the boat under sail in the canals. We arrived at a bridge on the outskirts of Amsterdam in the early afternoon, and were told that it was not possible to open the bridge until the next morning, screwing up our plan to spend the night in Amsterdam. There was a small dock we could wait at. The boat was well provisioned with wine, bread, deli meat and cheese. My friend's wife lured a goose to the side of the boat with bread, grabbed it and wrung its neck. While she cleaned and cooked it, we walked to a store and got some vegetables, and we had a roast goose dinner around 10 PM. By then we were on our fourth bottle of wine, and my friend's wife was speaking English.

hey...

Goose doesn't get ate here in the States becuz we don't have people dying from hunger. And IF---, we did have people dying from hunger becuz they don't like to eat goose or becuz they too stupid to know how to cook it, then its best they get out the way for those of us who are left.
