Comments on older stories or series

Hey guys just wanting to know from you authors who have older stories.

Do you guys get notified when new comments get posted to older submissions? Do you pay attention to feed back from older released stories?

Ill give an example. I recently came across an author who responded to previous thread RandyGimp and i went to check out his stories.
I read one of his previous submissions which was a series called " Eighteen" and let me tell you if you haven't read it give it a boo the SOB made shed some tears and pulled on heart strings with all the emotions.
I seriously was cursing him with some nasty names and filled with anxiety in a good way.

Only one other story so far has had me riled up as bad and that was " babydoll" i was ready to throw my phone with the anxiety it left me with.

Anyways since the early chapters were released already and story concluded i wasn't sure if i should even bother publicly commenting on chapters since authors may not see or pay attention.

Is there a point to commenting if story is older? Does the authors go back and revisit the chapters or stories once they are complete for feed back?

All comments get flagged on the author's control panel, so yes, we get notified.

You seem to be assuming that comments only get made about "writerly matters that might be useful to an author next time", which is rarely if ever the case for me.

I regularly get comments to older stories in my portfolio, which is excellent, because it means my whole back catalogue is being read.

Comments on older stories are rare, but they happen. We're notified, so we see them. I've gotten some pleasant feedback that way.

No no i didnt mean to imply about only writerly matters. I do enjoy posting public comments about if i enjoyed the chapter or story in general but i wondered if authors or writers even see the comments if the story is past a certain age in being released. For example" babydoll "was 28 chapters over years a with last chapter being released beginning of this year in new series he transitioned into called "sweet as sugar" as the continuation of babydoll.

After all by the time some new members come across the stories they are old and been released for a while but yet its their first-time reading it such as in my case. So i only get to comment or rate it once i come across it.

Yes, if he's looking at his "Activity" page the notice would come in right at the top. Not all authors follow their own pages, but that's up to him.

I've recently been notified of a few comments on some of my earliest stories I posted here (not that old, I've only been here since 2018). So yes, we get a notification for every comment and which story it's been made on. That includes all chapters of a story.

In fact, one of those comments advised me that I'd misspelled "prostate" and had used "prostrate". That was the second story I'd ever posted, so it's three years old, but no other commenter had ever mentioned that point until this commenter a couple of weeks ago.

But, as to whether an author sees the comment, we have to explicitly visit the comments page for the story. All we get notified of is a comment has been left, the notification doesn't include the text of the comment.

I constantly get comments on my early stuff, and a lot of tantrums thrown my way about my lackluster editing and so on. When I look at a story, I check the publication date and keep it in mind. Maybe the person has improved immensely, right?

I started the Alexaverse around six years ago, and things have changed a LOT in terms of what's canon. So when things change in the story, some readers have tantrums. I plan to reboot the series in due course, because I personally need to see it corrected, the earliest chapters brought up to code.

But yes, my older stuff gets a lot of comments because it's where people tend to land first. Once you've been around a while, it's pretty much a guarantee that's what will happen.

Not long ago I got a comment on chapter 4 of a 7 chapter IT story series I wrote and posted in 2019 complaining that there was no incest to that point and how much it sucked. All they had to do was go to chapter 5 to find some incest involving actual sex between the brother and sister. In any case it was a slow burn over the first 4 chapters with incidents like the brother seeing nude photos of his sister and being concerned how much he liked them or looking up her skirt, things like that.

I think the reason many of your readers may not have picked up on the difference between “prostate” and “prostrate” is because generally people don’t know the difference so it hasn’t spoiled the story for them. I’ve got prostate cancer and there are members of our local prostate cancer support group who refer to their condition as “prostrate cancer.”

I check my activity page every time I log onto Literotica, which is every day that I have an Internet connection, which means every day unless I'm on vacation somewhere without it. It makes no difference to my activity page whether a comment is to an old story or a new one. I check them all.

I'm especially gratified to see a comment to an old story, especially a positive one.

I agree. Whenever I post a new story, particularly a contest entry, it seems to generate interest in my older works. Some of the comments can be cruel, but most are positive, even on stories I had forgotten about.

PS: I had a comment today from someone who was reading one of my older stories again.

I get a trickle of comments on older stories. More frequently, if I write a sequel or new chapter in a continuing story, readers will go back to the earlier entry, and sometimes comment.

Any writer has got to be pleased when a reader (in this case another writer) has taken the trouble to go through one's back catalog and say something nice (and perceptive.)

Readers: don't ever hold back just because it is an older work.

I believe they do not. One has to keep in mind that for many, maybe most, readers, if they're reading the story for the first time it makes no difference to them if it's old or new. Many of them don't even know if it's old or new. If they pulled up the story based upon a toplist or a "similar stories" list, as I think many readers do, they may not even know. The date of the story doesn't appear in the body of the story itself, so the reader may not know the date, or care to find out.

My experience is that comments are relatively few and hard to predict. Older stories don't get as many comments because, except when they work their way of various lists and gain exposure, they don't get as many views.

I tend to comment on any story I gave a 5 or a 1 to or where I can offer some type of constructive feedback.

At least a third, maybe half of them are a year or more old. I know they get them, even people who have not posted a story in many years have replied, thanking me for commenting something nice and constructive.

During the last ten days, as well as comments on my latest two stories, I have comments on stories first posted in:

June 2010; August 2010; December 2020 and August 2021.

Last month I had a comment on a story posted in 2002.

I can see a reader doesn't look at the age of a story when the same user commented on one that's 9 years old they were upset at the half ass effort at editing because the grammar isn't as good as a previous two stories they read and commented on which were from the last two years.

So they think I was sloppy with a story where its in the reverse, the new ones show vast improvement over the years. But you'd have to look at the dates to know that.

Following on from lovecraft69's post above, I had a positive comment this year on a story I have been meaning to rewrite or drastically edit since it was first posted in 2002.

I think it is a mess but I keep deferring a rewrite because I'm not the author I was in 2002. I wouldn't write that story now, but anon thought it was great - which I don't...

I don't check this forum often, and it isn't easy to find material pertaining to my stories here. but on a rare occasion I will go down this rabbit hole. I came across your comment here. I'd just like for you to know that I have always appreciated constructive feedback and input regarding my stories and I appreciate what you have said here.

Yes, most comments come right after a story comes online and after that they basically dwindle to nothing. I constantly check on my personal page and get occasional follows and some comments on rare occasion. I know that I am not a prolific writer in comparison to some. I write when the stars align and they haven't been aligning as of late and I apologize for that.

The one thing that I can tell you is that when I get inspired comments and input that it does motivate me to write and continue forward. I am human and it is a turnoff when I get rotten apple comments. I don't mind a negative comment and/or negative feedback. I just don't like getting one-star votes and called names like I have received a few times. I hate when people purposefully try to tank my stories. I don't like people asking what is taking me so long. The deeper you get into a story, the harder it is to write the succeeding chapters. I have also noticed that viewership drops off as the chapters progress. I guess people get bored with it or eventually turned off.

the discussion moves forward.

Yes. I sign in via my author's dashboard so I see any new comments on older stories.

Some of the comments are great; some are just a single word; and some are abusive - just like on my newer stories.

One gets email notification of comments on threads here that one follows and one gets email notification of private feedback on stories. Why can't one get email notification of new public comments on stories?
I know, legacy software, money, can't be done, too busy, if you don't like this site get lost, etc...Really, these are excuses, not reasons...

But how hard is it, really, to go check your dashboard on a regular basis? But then, I turn all email notifications off, always.
