This is a statistical analysis of the results of stand-alone stories published to the Incest/Taboo category from 9/7 to 10/31, excluding 10/2. The results were taken seven days after the stories were published.

Why I/T? It has more stories published to it and has more daily views than any other LitE category. It's also the category I publish in.

I'm going to open with results by tag. Stories can have multiple tags, so it could have "sister", "son", "brother", and "mother". I'm including tags that have at least five stories.

Mother-son stories have the highest averages for views, favorites, rating and comments. Brother-sister stories are published at the same rate as mother-son. Father-daughter stories are less common the above two types of incest stories and don't do as well. Uncle-niece is less common and while they do comparable to brother-sister for rating and get about as many views as father-daughter, they get less favorites and comments than the types already mentioned.

Some tags worth noting - "anal" and "threesome" do well. Surprisingly to me is how well "lesbian" does. "romance" has the highest average rating of any tag.

I'm going to post some analysis that I've done before.

Again, there's no sweet spot. Increasing the number of pages seems to improve the results, plateauing at around 6 pages.

The results improve steadily once a story hit 4.45 (I had thought there'd be a bigger difference between 4.45 and 4.5). Below that, the number of views and comments I find surprisingly flat. There's a drop off in number of favorites, but not as big as I expected.

A million thank you's for this great sharing of data! It will take a considerable amount of time to digest all this and the others that you have provided.

Trying to write this response while looking at the data in this jumbled reply window is so crazy! As you posted it is well organized. While I try to reply it looks like a mound of ants!

More importantly. at a quick glance, I believe your data supports some info regarding reading levels at readable.com. and a few other sites that I have perused:

  • Average US reading level 7-8th grade
  • Newspapers are written for 11th grade
  • Amer. Med. Assoc. recommend medical docs no higher than 8th grade

George Klare, a readability researcher, says most popular novels are 7th grade level while the average adult reader is rated at 9th grade. [Most readers find it more comfortable reading novels at a lower level of comprehension/vocabulary as it is less taxing]

Another note on readable.com states that such novels are more popular when active dialog is used and passive voice use is less than 3% of syntactical structures.

You certainly have put a tremendous amount of work into your data collection! If I owned Lit - I'd give you a full-time job doing just what you have provided in this thread. :D

I'm sure this was more work than I realize. thank you for sharing. This data confirmed a lot of my 'gut' feelings.

What is your source for the basic data?

I've noticed that story stats visible to the readers (hub, story page) for my stories are usually incorrect compared to the stats on my home page. I haven't checked the stats on stories at the end of the new list. Maybe they're better.

I'm guessing the story pages, as all the data being gathered is in one place there. Other than stories less than a week old ( and perhaps a few with high toplist placings ) they're also not going to be all that far outdated due to limited activity.

I checked my most recent story, which has been up for more than two months, and the stats on the story page aren't even close to being right.

Story page: 4.56 rating, 39.6K views, 63 favorites, 17 comments.
Control panel: 4.67 rating, 46.8 views, 70 favorites, 17 comments.

So, the comments are right. The stats from the story page date from Oct 14th.

Can available stats pull out anything in IT/Taboo for father-son or brother-brother stories? Any such stories posted to that category (I wouldn't be brave enough to put one there) or any stats on how well they do?

I posted a story to the 2021 Nude Day contest, my first contest, and wanted to find out if it made any difference entering a contest. Every day of the contest I manually checked every story's story pages and the 30-day toplist (vote counts) of the category where the story was posted. I'd also check, less regularly, the author's story listing page.

I've noticed for several years now, that the stats on my control page are as current as are possible to get, but the stats listed with the story with the story highly vary. I didn't realize how much they varied until doing this Nude Day excersice.

The all time top list is updated in as close to real time as I am able to measure. The 30-day and 12-month top lists are delayed, sometimes as much as three days during the contest. I've checked the top lists for other reasons, post contest, and the all time remains real time while I've seen delays of two weeks in updating specific stories in the other two lists. I did not look at top lists other than scores.

I haven't taken the time to carefully collect data to determine how quickly the statistics on the story pages themselves or the author's story listing pages update. I did notice some general trends though, all based on the submitted 2021 Nude Day contest (using only my control page stats for base line.) During the contest, most story page stats would update in two to three days. A few, less well scoring or viewed, couild take a week to update.

My interest piqued, after the contest I've casually (not collected data, just observed) checked on how quickly my story catalogue updates the stats on the story pages compared with my control panel. As you've noticed, NotWise, it can take a long time to get updated stats onto the story pages themselves. I've noticed delays of several weeks, but haven't made a detailed analysis. The other thing I noticed is that all my stories aren't updated at the same time, or on a regular basis. I first noticed this when I changed the avatar photo. It took three weeks to update across my small story collection. I've kept daily download logs since the Nude Day contest and will reexamine this with real data.

When I've checked before, none of the story stats available to the readers were correct, and they generally don't agree with each other.

Stats shown on the category hubs can change when the list is expanded. For instance, when I first opened the "First Time" hub, the first story showed 5 views and nothing else. When I expanded the list it showed 3.7k views, 3.69 rating, and 6 favorites. I reloaded the hub, and the collapsed list showed the stats with 3.7k views, but the story page still shows 5 views.

The ratings listed on the author's public profile page are probably the most dependable. They typically update every night (US time). That isn't sufficient for new stories or contest stories, but its pretty good for older stories.

That's amazing work 8 Letters, and really interesting.

The one thing that really surprised me - no love for cousins? I thought cousin or cousins would have appeared on the tag list, but neither did.

It's a pity, I really enjoy writing about cousins.

That's weird. I just checked a half dozen of mine. Two recent ones ( IPOP and What Ails ) Two that are very popular and have had a lot of recent activity — including a Christmas story ( Rim Fire and Holly Jolley Christmas ) another popular one ( You Serious? ) and a random one ( Good Will )

Then I thought, well, only one of those ( What Ails 135 ) has low vote and view totals, so I added two more of my recent off-brand really short stories Becalmed and Breakfast Nook that only have around 300 votes and 20k or less views.

Every stat syncs up except for the views on Rim Fire, which shows 293.8 on my page and 293.7 on the story page, and the views on Becalmed, which shows 14k on my page and 13.8 on the story page.

Holly has 4 list additions and a new comment in the last week, Rim Fire has 3 list additions, You Serious has 2 list additions and a comment... So it's not as if they're static. ( Surprisingly, considering how long it's been since I put anything out )

No clue why yours would be so off so far out.

Being someone who has a thing for numbers and stats, these things are interesting in a sense, and I can appreciate the time it takes to pull this stuff together.

But what's the point?

If someone is a I/T fan they're going to write stories there regardless of the stats. If you're someone who's only concern here is volume of votes/comments etc, you're going to write there.

Don't like the topic? You're not writing there and don't care at all about the stats.

This goes for any genre, if you like it, you write it, you don't you don't.

Other than fueling people to write based on numbers rather than their muse I see no purpose to these.

When I've checked before, none of the story stats available to the readers were correct, and they generally don't agree with each other.

.

I've never understood the stat discrepancies among the different lists and databases.

For example, I published two incest stories last spring. On my My Stories page, it shows Story A having over 139,000 views, and Story B having over 132,000 views.

Both stories have enough views to be on the most-viewed Top 250 list for the last 12 months. But the numbers are off. On that list Story A has only 126,000 views, while story B has over 131,000. That's an enormous discrepancy of 13,000 views for Story A. Weird.

If you have multiple venues, data like this can help you decide whether posting a story here is worth it. It's also a way to have more realistic expectations prior to publication. Say you've been posting all mom/son or sibling and a cousin story pops into your head. That could feel pretty disappointing when the numbers come in if you don't know in advance.

Being someone who has a thing for numbers and stats, these things are interesting in a sense, and I can appreciate the time it takes to pull this stuff together.

In my catalog, the discrepancies are smaller on older stories. The largest discrepancies are on newer stories that are generally viewed more often. So the pattern has its biggest effect where it's most visible.

Even though the differences are smaller on older stories, the stats on older stories can still be way out of date. For one story published last April, the differences are fairly small, but the stats available to the readers were last updated sometime between 8/4 and 10/3 -- 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 months ago.

Still, the one you're talking about is two months out. I checked the last two of my recent ones, and they're all in sync as well. They're only 3 1/2 months out, and only one of the six has a discrepancy. It still seems weird to me that your public stats are so off from the private list.

I looked up three older ( because they all are ) stories each as Dark and Les as well. Two random ones with low view/vote totals and whichever one had the most activity on the first page of activity, and they're all in sync as well.

Anybody else have such wide and long-lasting gaps?

As far as the topists go, there's some odd mechanic where a story that has been swept doesn't typically update on the toplist until it has >= the number of votes it had the last time it was in the dataset. Entries at page transitions sometimes drop as well.

The story I cited with the large discrepancy was published in I/T on 10/3, so it would be part of 8letters data.

I noticed these discrepancy months ago, and I think I reported the issue to the tech support thread. For my stories, disagreements between the stats on my home page and the stats shown to the reader are the norm, but they're evidently larger on more recent stories.

I'm guessing the story pages, as all the data being gathered is in one place there.
That is correct. This was also done before the new script-based interface. I don't remember anyone mentioning inconsistencies in the numbers back then. With the script-based interface, they could be caching a lot of data, which would cause inconsistencies.

I checked the numbers for stand alone stories in I/T posted a week ago, using the public beta version of both the hubs and the stories.

Of course, I don't know what's on the author's CP, so I don't know what's "right."

Every one of the stat sets contains some variation. In every case (based on views) the stats on the hub are more recent than the stats on the story. The rating from the Author's catalog was probably updated the previous night -- about 18 hours before I wrote this.

The score is fairly stable. Views vary quite a lot. Favs are variable, comments are mostly the same.

I don't know why #2 showed no stats on the story.
