i was in 5th grade. it was such a warm november day that the classroom windows were all open and it was on the first floor. the kids from the catholic school got out before us and came by to holler in the window that jfk had been shot. our teacher left the class to go to the office to find out what was up, she ran into the cleaning lady who was standing in the hallway crying. they sent us home early, told us not to stop anywhere on the way and to get home asap. it was on the tv when i got home. my mother spent the next week complaining that the coverage pre-empted her soap operas. and i remember seeing oswald get shot in real time.

I have all of the Washington Post coverage of event and the funeral tucked away, thinking some museum will want it someday. I'm somewhere in the crowd around Memorial Bridge to watch the funeral go by. My parents are buried just down the hill from his grave. My dad got the same riderless horse treatment at his funeral and internment at Arlington.

I've read almost everything written on the subject, including the Warren Commission Report. This is the very best explanation I've seen. It's been sorted out by one of the top detectives in the World. Of course, Oswald had a plausible motive: He was a Communist (not a Party member, but a definite Comsymp, who lived in the USSR for a year), and particularly sympathetic to the Cuban Revolution, which he saw JFK as threatening.

By one account I read, the Soviets were so concerned with the optics of this that they immediately started propagating alternative conspiracy theories.

JFK conspiracy theorists are notoriously fractious and may hold to one of several competing theories:

Oswald made the shot; however he had some group providing logistics.
The mafia was behind it, as payback for JFK sleeping with their mistresses and his brother, Robert F. Kennedy, cracking down on organized crime after they allegedly helped them win Illinois in the 1960 election. Alternatively, they did it because JFK went too easy on Fidel Castro, which cost the mob revenues from Cuban casinos.

Fidel Castro himself was behind it, in retaliation for the Bay of Pigs invasion or numerous assassination attempts from the CIA.
The CIA, or a rogue faction of CIA agents and private wingnut activists was behind it.
The government of Israel and Mossad were behind it, because Kennedy opposed Israel's nuclear weapon development programs.
The Soviet Union brainwashed Oswald during his time in the USSR and programmed him to do it.[note 1] That or he was recruited by the KGB to do it. Or the KGB sent a double in his place. Or...
The Democrats assassinated Kennedy because he was a Conservative. People like Mary Lou Bruner believe this.

Lyndon Johnson was behind the assassination. (Due to LBJ's personality and style, this is the one that manages to get the most fanfare.)

Principia Discordia author Kerry Thornley was Lee Harvey Oswald's best friend in the Marines in 1959, so there is a Discordianism connection to the assassination.
Kennedy shot first.
The driver shot Kennedy. This one is thought to be a parody since there would be millions of people seeing JFK being shot. Unfortunately, it isn't.[note 2]
Oswald shot Kennedy through the neck and a Secret Service agent in the following car accidentally shot him in the head raising his rifle to return fire (the third casing by Oswald was used to keep the chamber of his rifle clean).
Oswald was a patsy and Joseph Milteer, a right-winger associated with extremist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and who was under surveillance for threatening to kill the president, had arranged or participated in the assassination.[3] Some believe Milteer was part of a conspiracy masterminded by the Papacy which involved the U.S. Intelligence communities and remnants of the Third Reich brought over during Operation Paperclip.[4]
Kennedy arranged it all as an elaborate suicide.
Kennedy was killed by a version of himself from the future, because otherwise it would cause WWIII. (Okay, that makes a lot less sense out of context. But that episode of Red Dwarf was badass.)
Kennedy survived and was replaced by a double "they" buried instead, alien abducted, still secretly running things from behind the scenes along with his family, the "curse" being a huge smokescreen, died in a mental institution as a vegetable from the brain damage... take your pick.
Kennedy was shot in the head in Dallas but survived thanks to the government putting a metal plate in his head, they then dyed his skin brown and put him in a nursing home to live out the rest of his days as the senile old man no one believes. After this he meets Elvis Presley (who everyone thinks is actually just an Elvis impersonator, mainly because this Elvis was bored of being Elvis so he went and swapped places with an Elvis impersonator) and they go on a quest to kill a resurrected mummy who is sometimes referred to as Bubba ho-tep.

Trove of new documents on JFK assassination released by Biden administration.

According to CNN.com, the documents were scheduled to be disclosed in Oct. 2021 but were put on pause due to national security issues. Now, just a little over a month later, 1,500 documents are being disclosed. That leaves 10,000 documents left that have been redacted or withheld. It's that reason that JFK researchers assume the so-called "smoking gun" isn't included.

"Because it has taken [the government] so long to get these records out, no matter what comes out, no one is going to believe that that's it," said an official familiar with the document classification.

The documents were delayed due to "protect against identifiable harm to the military defense, intelligence operations, law enforcement, or the conduct of foreign relations that is of such gravity that it outweighs the public interest in the immediate disclosure."

But what was scheduled to be disclosed was supposed to be a much bigger deal. However, Biden's Oct. 2021 decision creates a deadline for the full 10,000 pages.

Any U.S. agency that seeks to withhold the pages beyond Dec. 2022 must provide to the White House "an unclassified index identifying for each such record the reasons for which the agency is proposing continued postponement of information in such record," according to Biden's order.

Such an order would ensure all information would be released.

Yep, as soon as he evolved his thinking to include economic justice, class justice, reparations, essentially an examination of have and have nots...he was abandoned by even his most staunch supporters.

His last year's were full of threats, FBI wire tapping and intimidation (by J. Edgar crossdresser and others).

People either conveniently forget or it isn't taught what the precursor events that lead up to his assassination....which may very have had(my belief) govt backing and ties. Definitely, hard to prove

I was 5 months old, so I have you beat by two months. My first memory of JFK was from a portrait that hung in the dining room of a restaurant that my parents used to go to -- there was something about the portrait I found creepy and it scared me.

The other thing I have a more vivid recollection of was the Geraldo Rivera special in 1975 or 1976 where he showed the Zapruder film for the first time. I remember being fascinated by the kill shot with his head just looking like it exploded.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like if they had today's technology back then. How many 4K HDR resolution videos would there be from how many angles. There was one special that I saw on the topic which had gathered all the film that was shot as the motorcade went into Dealy Plaza, and there were like four 8mm cameramen in the area at the time, shooting pictures as the motorcade entered the Plaza.

Now, there aren't a lot of new revelations here. Just some bits and pieces:

That information revealed that shooter Lee Harvey Oswald attempts to get a Soviet or Cuban visa, which the CIA thought was part of his plan to make a quick escape after the slaying.

Some of the new documents go into great detail about sources and possible Cuban spies and Soviets being monitored by the CIA.

Aline Mosby, a reporter for the United Press International in Moscow and later in Beijing was also among those identified in the documents. She interviewed Oswald in 1959. The FBI suspected that she was a Soviet agent at the time, and some documents detail interviews with sources about her. However, the documents had sources saying that she was drugged and found in the gutter in Moscow.

Former newsman Norman Ray "RUNNION said that this episode was considered an attempt by the Russians to place UPI at a disadvantage, so that in the event PI should in the future incur the displeasure of the Soviet Government, they could concoct a similar incident and have Miss MOSBY expelled from the USSR with resultant publicity. He said that to avoid such an eventuality, UPI transferred. Miss MOSBY to another post, thus terminating her career in Moscow."

And what were they so afraid of? The most interesting thing about the political leftism of the 1960s is that nothing much ever came of it -- almost all those involved eventually lost interest and got caught up in adult careers; those who remained active in politics went with the Democrats, and eventually accommodated to the DLC's DINO vision of accepting let-the-rich-get-richer neoliberal economics, and trying to moderate its worst effects just a little bit around the edges.

Even at the time, while a lot of radicals talked about revolution, they never really had any clear revolutionary agenda -- no vision of what might replace the economic and political status quo. Their vision of radicalism seems to have been more cultural than anything else. See the New Left.
