It is going to be hard to find Kim Potter Guilty of the most serious charges, in my opinion. Anything involving intent is not going to hold water. This is another case of not following the social obligation of respecting the legitimate authority of the police leading to a predictably awful outcome.

I guess this trial will decide that. Obviously it isn't as simple as that. Many factors came together that led to his death. Despite the risk of appearing to blame the victim, He made poor life decisions that put him in a potentially dangerous situation, Choosing to run from the police changed a simple, safe encounter into a life and death battle.Having never been in that situation, I certainly don't know how I would react. It's a tragedy.

I thought in this case, they were doing a good job. Assuming you've seen the video, what, specifically do you think the cops should have done differently?
They initiated the stop because of air fresheners hanging from the rear view, which is illegal in Minnesota. I don't know how i feel about that. I've seen some cases where that could be a hazard, but most of the time it isn't. It almost seems like an excuse to stop people. Then the guy had an expired tag and outstanding warrant. What were the options? Should they not have stopped him? Maybe let him go and go to his house to arrest him? It seems like Mr. Wright was the party who escalated the encounter.

The actions of the police officer led to him being shot.

Had she acted appropriately, the criminal would be in jail currently instead of the grave.

I'm trying to be open minded and actually have a conversation. The decedent turned this into an unnecessarily dangerous encounter. His actions were going to lead to a bad out come, no matter what. I believe citizens have an obligation to comply with th lawful orders of the police. If you don't believe that, we don't have a society. These officers seemed to be doing their job professionally. Isn't it a truth, that if the subject complied, this would not have happened?

We’re on the same page.

I have raised three kids and they ALL know what to do when confronted by police. They’ve heard the speech over and over again. “You follow an officers orders to the letter. You keep your hands where they can see them at all times. You ask permission to reach into the glove compartment or anywhere else. Keep your mouth shut and be polite. If you resist arrest for ANY reason, what happens next is on you, PERIOD!”

Pretty simple. The ridiculous lack of respect for Police authority in this Country, is astonishing. COPS have LEGAL AUTHORITY, they are human and by definition, incapable of perfection. No different than anyone else. I’ve yet to hear a case where a suspect complied the way I’ve taught my kids to comply, and it ended up with the suspect getting shot and/or killed.

You're missing an imprtant piece of the sentence there...maybe that's your problem.

I would expect that perfection is not needed when it comes to accidentally killing someone.

If you watched the video, due to the actions of the suspect, what was a routine stop by police, suddenly escalated to a high stress situation where officers had fractions of a second to make decisions. “Incompetence” was not what caused this. Will mistakes be made in these situations? Occasionally, yes. You stated thei job is to “de-escalate” a situation. That is what they were attempting to do by handcuffing the suspect. He instead chose to escalate the situation by attempting to run setting up a situation for “mistakes” or in your words, “incompetence” to happen. I have no sympathy for the suspect. He chose poorly and in doing so, escalated it to a point where police had to make very difficult, under extreme stress, decisions. It cost the suspect his life. Sucks to be him but the cops shouldn’t be hung out to dry because of the suspect’s poor choices!
