Reverse Missionary: What Is It?

I've read conflicting descriptions in various sources. Some people seem to believe that reverse missionary means the standard missionary position, only with the woman on top. i.e. Like cowgirl, only with the woman lying flat instead of sitting up perpendicular to the male.

However, I've always believed (and other sources agree) that reverse missionary is a "from behind" position, with the woman lying face-down upon the mattress, and the man plowing her from on top.

So which one is it?

I'm writing a scene where the woman is lying face-down on the mattress, with her lover screwing her on top, and I need to know whether or not it's correct to call this "reverse missionary". And if not, what's the proper term?

I have never heard of anyone speak of reverse missionary. I don't think it's really a thing.

On the other hand I'm not quite sure why most sex positions even have names.

I cannot say I have heard of this position being named.
I am not a guru on position names, But the everyday ones, yes, and I don't know if this position has a name.

I would be interested to find out. Now I want to know. Bugger! It's going to be a 2 am in the morning thing, isn't it, brain?.

I'm going to propose the first one will from now on be called "racing cowgirl" (since riders tend to hunch up when racing) and the other one "dead fish".

I have no idea where that name has come from, but if you were ever planning to invite me to go on a fishing trip with you, you needn't bother, now.

Well, it's not a position in which the girl can really do much, right? Kind of like fish on dry land. She kind of has to be sort of inanimate in order to be submissive.

I'm alright on fishing trips as long as I don't have to be the one to kill the fish and get the hook out of its mouth. The teeth scare me.

If the meaning of a term is this unclear, I would stick to the description of the position.

If you need it, would it be possible to have one character mentioning the name, and the other asking what's meant by it? In that case, the term even doesn't need to be correct.

I've never heard the term either. And I used to read More! magazine with its Position of the Fortnight and tried several of them. Admittedly I didn't pay much attention to the names.

I’ll have to defend the position, whatever it’s called. Some women reach down and rub their clit during, and achieve a double-stimulated orgasm that way. As to the name, I think the competing view with the woman on top is “on top”, so claim reverse missionary all you want. But toss in a description too.

Maybe you’ll sway the pendulum and reverse missionary will come from behind!

Prone position

I've seen and used a position that I would call "reverse missionary." The man on his back, possibly inclined, with his legs together, and the woman is laying on him so they're face to face and her legs are outside his. She's in control.

I'm pretty sure that position would be named in the Kama Sutra. I saw it used in a video on the Tantra and the woman in that case used slow strokes with partial penetration. It looked better for her than for the guy, who might be working to keep it up.

Never heard of it. And you don't need a label for it. Just describe the position in terms of how they arrange their bodies. That's generally a better way to write a sex scene anyway: focus on the verbs and on what the bodies are doing, rather than on the label that's sometimes given to the end result. I might use the term "doggy-style" sometimes, because it has (to me) a hot and nasty connotation. But I cannot recall ever having used the term "missionary position," because there's nothing sexy about missionaries. Unless they're missionaries of a sexy cult.

I googled it, and found no universal agreement on what "reverse missionary" is. Some of the definitions vary wildly. The most common is the one I described above: man on his back, woman lying on him face-to-face with her legs outside his.

As MB said, the position with the woman flat on her belly is "prone," but as Mr. Doom said, you're better off skipping the name and describing the position -- if for no other reason, then because the names aren't universally understood. Your readers might develop very different images of what's going on, which could lead to confusion.

Beside, describing their position and how they use it is way more erotic than naming it.

No Missionaries were harmed in the making of this thread.

It was St Augustine who lead the Roman Catholic Church to discourage any position but Missionary. All other positions were animalistic. I wondered for a moment if he would have accepted reverse missionary, because it has the same face-to-face property as missionary.

Then I remembered a renaissance-era list of penances for sexual acts. It had a pretty harsh penance for any woman-on-top. That list included a relatively mild penance for sex with a young boy, and no penance for sex with a young girl.

And what do we call that position where the man is flat on his back with the woman lying on top of him, also flat on her back, so both are facing upward? I've liked that one because I'm entering her from behind, giving both of us full access to her clit and labia and breasts. And if it's a mirrored ceiling, both of us can appreciate the view.

Supine? Reverse of prone.

Edit: Some writers feel free to make up names for sex positions, and some are strange. One described this position as "The Slither."

I did not know this, thanks. Augustine also wrote that the evidence for Original Sin was very clear - erections in the male.

The fact that an erection could occur 'without will' and spontaneously, was an indication of the deeply rooted, degraded basis of concupiscence. If one ever needed proof of Original Sin, there it was.

Augustine had some weird sexual ideas, and they've influenced Christianity ever since. This I "know" from researching Renaissance sex and the influence of the church for my story of Rodrigo and Honoria in "A Valentine's Day Mess."

Some of the nobility -- especially in France -- openly flaunted the Church's rules. After all, the guy spouting the rules was often their younger brother or a cousin and they didn't need to listen.

There's a weird position where the guy lays on his back, but on the edge of something-like a woman normally would-and the woman is between his legs with his cock towards her and fucking him.

No idea what its called, and I've wanted to use it in a story, but its so rare even in visual porn that I don't know if anyone could really be able to picture it. Seeing I have no clue what its called I can't even look it up on porn hub or anything to get a link.

As near as I can tell, most names for sex positions are just made up. If you knew the name, then it would probably mean something different to someone else. It's better to describe the act.

If it's the way I picture it, I still wonder the mechanics of it.

I think I may have seen a variation of it in some old Cosmo. I think they utilized a swim mattress in it.

I think that's someone's Nude Day/Summer Lovin' entry covered.
