Just how much of his looming ~12B federal income tax bill Elon can offset taking that 6.6B deal to distribute food packs from World Food Programme? Can we tie this money show going on right now to him awaiting FAA reassessment of his launch site?

I think that $6.6B would be better spent building infrastructure like electrical generation and desalination plants so the people in African countries have enough water to grow food for themselves.

Teach a man to fish...

No doubt.

The UN guy argues though, that it's unique combination of events that puts up to 24 million people in acute threat of famine, so even one off handouts could go a long way to keep situation in check and large migration waves from moving... just yet, anyway?

Also no doubt Elon is in it for the show value (and just imagine the storm when he says, nope), and I argue he my be trying to hint regulators there's options where his tax money goes...

Also, it doesn't really cost him much, right? And he may probably use it rub Bezos...

Bill Gates looked at the World...and asked where could my money save the most lives? As a result, malaria is decreasing just about everywhere. What has Elon ever done that didn't benefit him too? If he is such a smart man...you would think he would look at the World and ask himself...how can I help my fellow man by reducing death. Nope. Never gonna happen. He is nothing more than a Donald Trump in disguise. Well...maybe that is too much...but he is still young and he could easily exceed Trump in disgustabikity

White - yuk!

Male - yuk!

South African - yuk!

Elon Musk, one of the richest, most successful men in the world being a white Pretorian man is a big FUCK YOU to all the social justice warriors everywhere.

not really.

what makes you think they care about a Howard Hughes-wannabe shithead who lives and dies by his board investors? the bigger you are, the more strings you're attached to and he ain't bigger than the world. Nobody is.

he couldn't even hold down a wife and child, which is socially the last growing point of a man from being a boy. everything he does from here on out is to show off to impress other schmuck dudes like you.

He'll probably use it to build the Pi Phone and his Starlink world wide Internet system and suck up much of Apple's market share.

The dead ass envy is thick and sticky on Zumi's stoop.:D

See how their insecurities are so evident? What the fuck does him being white have to do with his morality? Or being a man? Or being from South Africa? Exactly....nothing. What has Elon done similar to Gates? Bezos? Or the ex wife of Bezos? Name one thing. I will wait

Well. His role in history is to be a disruptive agent of change. One can't do that without being an asshole. He couldn't have led the age in human history he opens without being stubborn and repulsive. He wouldn't survive otherwise.

Two things:

1. He made the EV revolution, now unstoppable, almost singlehandedly, and against great resistance, and I firmly believe against significant risk to his very life (going against industry with talk about billions a day, one has to assume that). There was no guarantee it would happen, magically, on it's own,
and significant evidence of the contrary. It's a heroic deed.

Without someone like him, we most likely wouldn't be where we are for a long time, still lost in theoretic arguments is electric transportation ever feasible at large scale, counter exampled with a couple half-assed compliance hybrids if that, waiting for one holy grail technology or another (like solid state lithium metal batteries, or even hydrogen energy). There was no technical reasons, no roadblocks that wasn't deliberate obstruction and oil industry subsidies, for BEV not to happen literally anytime, but since nineties for sure. Nickel battery was, by inventor's intent a car battery. It was bought and buried.

With Tesla, he won no less than a war fought in financial markets, and won, giving us all an opening for meaningful impact on climate change. Potentially, savior of the planet, no less, and I'm not quite joking.

2. He's now already US space program in its entirety, and he's just starting. Again, he's not really inventing anything fundamental, he's "just" taking Ford treatment to the space industry, and the options that unlocks will be no less transformative. Not even talking about science.

The "old" space in US is disfunctional for a long time, mired in mindboggling corruption and inefficiency. The ill famous SLS (dubbed Senate Launch System for good reasons) is such a cruel joke with no purpose, currently estimated at $4.1B per launch, and it's a fully expendable system jerry rigged from old shuttle parts that haven't flown yet. At this point best that could happen for American taxpayer is if the first test flight (expected sometime next year, but surely not February as currently planned, further delays are all but guaranteed) will see the thing exploding upon liftoff, taking the pad with it.

Without SpaceX, that would be the pinnacle of space tech still. All the dozens of small and upcoming commercial launch providers around the world, none of them would exist without Elon's success against all odds. At some point he put all his money in one more rocket launch attempt and it flew. Rest was just a technical question. Still, he could pump his success for all it worth for a long time. He would dominate the market for a decade or more anyway. But he's a guy with a vision and self appointed mission, and goes forward as fast as he can.

Starlink is just a curious accident and side show, probably literally arousing from a discussion what they could do with unused lift capacity. That it would eventually print money... now it's obvious to everyone and there's literally a dozen copycat competitors overnight, but it was objectively impossible without the first step (with is reusable Falcon 9 first stage).

Beyond that? We literally don't know all the cool things Starship will unlock.

I wonder how much money he keeps in his wallet for walking around cash.

Probably not that much, living in a container on a construction site (well, that's a bit of hyperbole, but not all that untrue). He's a paper billionaire with almost all his wealth tied in stock, with still is at large startup funny money. There's ways to get cash against it without selling, but yeah, he's not exactly cash billionaire.

The whole gambit comes from him having no salary at Tesla, just stock options that unlocks at certain milestones. And a large batch of those expire in August next year. But to realize those he has to pay income tax on the difference since they were awarded, and that's... almost all of it. At current prices the tax is to the tune of $10B. The only way to pay that is to sell stock he already owns, and of course pay tax on capital gains against those sales.

Sure him selling drive price down, what in his current situation isn't a bad thing as far I understand. He comes on top at the end anyway, so no worries.

I bet he still carries a few thousand with him. He seems like the kind of guy that likes to flash the cash.

I doubt Gates ever has more than a 20 on him. He seems like a tight wad to me.
