Rewriting someone elses story, good idea or horrible?

Originally i did consider a scene for scene rewrite, but after the feedback here I will use the basic idea of that story to create mine.

Then add it to the stack of half finished stories that slowly get worked on. I know me...lol.

Just take the gist of the scene, what you found hot or intriguing about it and grow it from there. That way you're paying a homage of sorts to what inspired you, but its all yours.
