Article II, Section 2 sums it up. Throw in the oath of office and the duties are specified.
Commander in Chief of the armed forces, the international face of US policy, and the faithful administration of laws passed by congress. Outside of the foreign dimension the duties and powers of the president are limited.
That being said I've watched the perceptions of the powers of the president morph over the years. It has now reached the point that many expect the president to intervene on their own personal dilemmas.
"Hep me, hep me, my chile be sick."
That's an exaggeration of a pervasive attitude that transcends any racial or cultural identity. It's a mind set that leads, inevitably, to absolute dictatorship. And that, just as inevitably, will lead to the total suppression of any criticism of the dictator.
Why would anyone of sound mind would expect the president to intervene on their behalf? What's even worse is that those petitioning the 'president' for favor the demands distill to money, not legislative relief of circumstance.
We are on the cusp of not only a civil war, but WWIII. One or the other, and God forbid both, are coming, just a matter of when. NONE of those eventualities are going to work out well for anyone.
