I baled on Facebook about two years ago. Too much of a time suck and too easy to access. Once I saw that it was tracking things I looked at on other web sites, throwing up advertisements for the very items I was looking at, that was it for me. I can only assume it's gotten worse. And the fact that Facebook going down the other day seemingly caused a world-wide panic can't be good. I'm glad I'm out.

Meh. The only reason I even have a Facebook page is because my college girlfriend insist I sign up so we could be "In a Relationship" on her page. That was way, way back when it was just for college students. I quit using it the moment she got dropped to the curb and I've never looked back.

I feel bad for those of you that feel you have to use it to stay connected. It's a horrific monstrosity of social media that really should be killed with fire. Metaphorically speaking, obviously.

Eh. When I was still viable in the workforce, my boss hammered at me to get on MySpace and then Facebook and then Twitter and I don't remember what all. Even World of Warcraft. All in the name of connecting with my students. At first, I held out that I had office hours and they could get to me then or not at all. But, when it came down to choosing the paycheck or my principles, I gave in.

After falling ill, I gradually weaned myself away from it all. The last being WoW when my late wife and main running buddy for it died.

These days, I occasionally poke my nose into Lit. Otherwise, I'm just fine letting the digital superhighway pass me by. Nothing about me or my current life is very interesting to anyone else. And I've found very little of interest in what other people find important enough to post on theirs. Or the people that seem to find the gossip of others so all consuming.

***shrug*** I do find it interesting, however, that of it all, Facebook is the one that pops up in my email about a decade later trying to tell me how much I'm missing. Uh... no, I'm really, really not.

Was never interested in it. Joined to reconnect with a friend who was diagnosed with cancer (12 years later he is clear and healthy). After a month I closed my account and left the following message when asked why...

I really don't give a fuck what Kara is making for lunch.

After reading all the stuff being reported about their business model now, I am glad I never got into that or any of the other social media platforms as they are all doing the same thing... creating anger and fueling hate in order to get clicks which generates revenue.

Not sure, but if you're talking about a school of some kind, they should have started their own website with an .edu domain name. For public schools an option would be a .gov domain name which are usually provided free by the State.

They would have far better control over content and student communications, giving each staff member and student their own account.

It's all about lazy. Businesses sometimes don't even have a .com or .biz website, oping only for a ZuckerBook place. No domain name or hosting account fees or maintenance I guess.

Agree, when my kids were in HS we led a group of parents to force the school to stop using FB and twitter as communication tools to students and families. Clubs, sports, etc could for marketing and stuff, but communication could not require kids to use those tools.

Business are stupid with that. I can't tell you how many businesses I end up not using because I can't get what I need to make a decision without being a user. I'll just take my money somewhere else.
