Manchin stands firm on filibuster, Dem plans for debt ceiling hike thwarted

West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin said Wednesday that "nothing’s changing" when it comes to his stance on the workings of the filibuster – suggesting Democratic attempts to raise the debt ceiling could again be thwarted.

Senate Democrats are facing mounting pressure to increase the nation’s debt threshold by Oct. 18, amid concern from the Biden administration that the U.S. could default on financial obligations.

Republicans in the upper chamber, who have already voted twice against raising the U.S. debt limit, are expected to block another vote Wednesday.

The debt ceiling is for past (i.e. already passed) budgets. It is basically just a signature saying we'll pay our bills.

The other bills being considered would be addressed in future ceiling increases, as needed.

There is absolutely no reason other than political warfare to have the debt ceiling.

And the only result from blocking it is doing harm to our standing in the world.

Sadly, Americans overall conflate the whole mess.....mostly Republican deficit hawks.

Good news! Today McConnell reiterated that the GOP would assist Democrats in expediting a reconciliation bill to lift the borrowing cap if Democratic leadership wanted to address the borrowing cap before the October deadline.
