The CIA pitched Trump officials plans to assassinate Julian Assange while he was hiding in a London embassy in 2017, report says.

"Yahoo News said the report was based on interviews with more than 30 former US officials.

Yahoo News reported that US officials picked up intelligence suggesting that Russia was planning to smuggle Assange out of the UK to Moscow, prompting a search for ways to ensure that he wouldn’t escape.

Among the possible scenarios to prevent a getaway were engaging in a gun battle with Russian agents on the streets of London and ramming the car that Assange would be smuggled in, former officials told Yahoo News.

Ultimately, assassination plans were dropped because of legal concerns at the highest levels of the Trump administration, Yahoo News reported."

Seriously. No threads on this??????????????????
from either side?????????????
It's huge.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Does this include the murder of reporters? I'm pretty sure government agents murdering reporters would be a violation of that.

It would simply be illegal -- no need to invoke constitutional rights.

.
Julian Assange had better have some platinum level security when he finally does leave jail, because the Russians may take him out and try to pin it on the CIA after this report.

He's served his purpose, and his death being blamed on the U.S. would be icing on the cake for Putin.

Exact same thing can be said about Donald Trump. ;)

I'm no lawyer but all rights and laws are constitutionally based. Can't have one without the other.

The federal and state constitutions spell out what government can do, and what it can't -- constitutional rights fall under the latter heading, but laws against murder fall under the former, that's the difference.

Assange is a very strange person but no fool. You can be reasonably sure that should his death occur, his version of the story will emerge, and it will be deeply embarrassing - but for whom?

I'm slightly surprised that the US still wants Assange, not sure what they will gain by it.

It’s a fake news site.

Also, ramming a car won’t assassinate anyone. Cars are now designed to keep passengers alive in accidents.

That MIGHT be a bridge to far even for Putin.......

I emphasize MIGHT.

Nope, there's no bridge too far for Putin in terms of assassination. He doesn't even particularly care if people know/assume he's behind it. It helps establish the image he wants to maintain. He's proud that he's the last KGB assassin standing.

Yeah, my thoughts are kind of muddled around the decade-long Assange saga, so I was curious to see what you guys think.

1. On the one hand:
Of course I am 90% with everybody else: Assange the hero who exposed how unethical/secretly oppressive govts. are.
((And Even TYT, the a very Leftist/pro-Obama site, have lately turned 180 to condemn Obama for starting harsh policies on whistleblowers, and trying to suppress freedom of the investigative press. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm9xrsoOxQk))

2. But on the other hand:
Assange DID exclusively reveal the dirty dealings of US/UK govts., and never those of China/Russia.

-- I don't think Assange was on China's/Russia's payroll, I think he did it out of conscience. But he Did unintentionally put China/Russia at an advantage.
-- How does one see Pompeo's desire to assassinate Assange in lieu of a potential escape to Russia? Concerns about Assange being co-opted to give info to Russia in the future, or about not emboldening other whistleblowers?
((As much as I condemn Obama/CIA/Trump for their attempts to squash the freedom of investigative press, I totally see why they would have considered assassinating Assange.))

Sweet Baby Jebus...

I notice that just putting Trump in a title guarantees you'll have a hit thread.

All that winning...

yeah, true. In a similar vein: I read across several publications, and:
DemocracyNow bash Trump while no word about Obama's stance on whistleblowers
Russia Today: bashes US establishment & no word about their own plot
haven't read Fox news, but I suspect they're trying to exonerate Trump.

But for the rest of the world, this isn't about any specific president, it's about long-term Global Western trends.

I have a feeling that the CIA putches plans like this often. Tbh, this is no different than a terrorist being targeted...Massage made himself an enemy of the state.

In regards to the topic of drone strikes, they have and are being used in place of military offensives....as a way to skirt Congressional approval. Repealing the blanket military force approval that came after 9/11 would be a good start to reigning these instances in.

John Kiriakou is now giving anti-CIA interviews all over youtube.

Is that anti CIA or Anti particular operations of the CIA?

If you want to identify the person who has done more damage to the CIA and its role, there is only one candidate: Mike Pompeo. He used the institution almost solely for his own self agrandisment.
