Nuclear, or natural gas- or solar or hydroelecric both of which are renewable, are the best solutions.

Or, perhaps there is another alternative: Exploring some type of emission capture or carbon capture technology for coal plants. Of the CO2 emissions are the issue, work on a technological solution to capture and re-constitute those carbon emissions. "Scrub" the CO2 and soot from the emissions, so the end byproduct is pure carbon soot and oxygen, instead of carbon dioxide. It would bring back coal as a viable source of power without the CO2 and emissions problems that current coal plants face. Can this be done? I don't know; I'm not a physicist or chemist. But I don't see why a team of physicists of chemists cant work together on solving the coal emissions problem from this particular angle.

My grandparents heated with coal. Had the coal room in the basement that the big truck would deliver to and shovel thru a door in the wall. The furnace had flames that looked like they came from hell itself. It was warm and smelled earthy. They would spread the clinkers in the drive like gravel. The world was a lot different then. Less complicated.
