Journey with us, if you will, all the way back to August 2019. In a budget deal passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump, Washington suspended the U.S. debt limit for two years — two years in which Republicans refrained from pitching a fit every time the U.S. needed to borrow more money.

And borrow we did, under an administration and Congress that slashed taxes by trillions while dramatically increasing federal spending, even before the COVID crisis hit. With aid of three separate increases to the debt ceiling, the federal debt soared by nearly $7.8 trillion during Trump’s four-year tenure — the third biggest increase relative to the size of the economy of any presidency in history (after Lincoln, who fought a civil war, and George W. Bush, who launched two foreign wars).

We wish we could say Republicans are treating Americans like fools, that the vast majority will see through their gaslighting. The sad truth is, the debt and deficit remain a potent political weapon with a critical mass of voters who rage against the Washington machine. So, each and every time Republicans are out of the White House, they wield the weapon like warriors, before proceeding to fall on their swords whenever one of their own is in power.

So predictable, so poisonous.

Republicans are deplorable.

SAD!!!

What? The Democrats that have 51 votes in the Senate and a majority in the House can’t get it done? 😂

Dems have th votes, GOP can't stop them. Let them do the dirty work so they can apend more money we don't have.

You two are either as dumb as rocks or so damned partisan you're blind. It doesn't matter if the Dems have the house and 51 votes in the Senate. As long as the filibuster is in effect in its present iteration, the Republicans are going to block anything and everything they can, just because they can. They'd burn down the fucking house rather than compromise with the opposing party. Such is the state of the Grand Old Party. A bunch of fucking infantile assholes. And before you go getting all butt hurt, remember what the Repubs did during the negotiations for the ACA. The Dems gave them EVERYTHING they asked for in the bill. The Repubs strung them along and when it finally came up for a vote, they voted against it. That was a vindictive, asshole political game and nothing more. Unfortunately, that wasn't a one-off situation. The Repubs adopted it as their modus operandi and are using it now.

As far as I'm concerned the filibuster isn't sacrosanct. The only reason it exists is because someone thought it would foster bipartisanship. Yeah, like that happens a lot anymore. The only consideration on whether to do away with it is what will happen when the Republicans come to power. But we managed without it for a very long time. We can again. Let the party in power make the rules, as it was designed to be.

Perhaps this repost will give you a better
First three years of the Trump admin the national debt stood at 23.3 trillion/ 106.9 % of GDP, over 3 years. Good economic numbers realized a net increase in the debt/ deficit spending at about .05% of total GDP whereas Obama's increase was over 4% per annual deficit increases.

Trump's last year/2020 the debt rose 4.5 trillion where deficit spending was due to propping up the economy, providing federal assistance during a pandemic related recession WARDING OFF A POSSIBLE DEPRESSION.

Had the covid experience never materialized the possibility of negative deficit spending could have been a reality.

Now fast forward to today and the numbers are skyrocketing. If the 4.2 trillion dollar personal infrastructure bill passes in concert with the 1.2 trillion infrastructure bill the numbers will go off the charts/ Biden..Pelosi..Schumer. Tax increases will slow the economy, revenue will slow and deficit spending will increase exponentially as it relates to percentage of GDP deficit spending increase.

Increased deficit spending, increased taxes along with runaway inflation will further devaluate the dollar/ prices go up while the value of the dollar goes down. The CPI is already at about 5%.

Yup! Nancy and the Chuckster are the answer and Joe is just plain incompetent

NB: Raising the debt ceiling while pissing another $3.5T down the Money Hole == Burning down the fucking house.

Infrastructure really is falling apart. The economy really does need stimulus. There's no way out of our present situation without massive spending.

Exactly. Until the GOP starts acting as adults...then treat them as they act...children.

39 house Democrats voted against ACA and Obama hung them out to dry. It was a sucky bill, so much so the Dems lost the majority. People didn’t even know what was in the bill. Pelosi’s … ya have to pass the bill to see what’s in it.. Dems are trying to pull the same shit again.

They used reconciliation to jam through the ACA, and now they’re planning to use it for a $3.5 trillion tax and spending package that will contain lord knows what. Your party can try it for this. They need to step up or shut up.

Democrats spend 100% of the money on crap, and then expect Republicans to take responsibility. You have the votes, raise the debt limit yourself.

I wonder why a State such as California...which promotes liberal ideals when it comes to spending...has a surplus of money? How is that a failure? Spend money liberally...and get $7 back for each dollar spent.

You have reconciliation remember?

They'd burn down the fucking house rather than compromise with the opposing party.

Sucks when the shoe is on the other foot doesn't it?

Yabbut, they're all moving to Texas! Except they're not really, but shut up.

You’re not exactly incorrect. However, I don’t think most conservatives think that deficit spending isn’t a problem. The GOP USED to be fiscally conservative. They’ve clearly gone off the rails. I for one, have been agitated for years by the out of control spending. No budgets, just spend on whatever the cause du jour of the day presents. Your criticism doesn’t land on deaf ears!

Not this time. The pubs don't want to finance their own destruction.

Surprisingly, that's just about right. They want the debt ceiling to be raised because they know what will happen to the economy if it isn't, but they also don't want to support a Dem-led plan that will help the economy. In short, they want to have their cake and eat it too.

No, it's not.

Increased defense spending, which the Pubs always want, is certainly crap, when we already spend more than the next 10 or 11 biggest-spending nations combined, and all that high-tech shit never seems to help us win a fight any more.
