If the statements in the original post are true, why was he selected? And why was he elected? Was the opposition even worse?

My father had a fright in the 1930s. He was a trade Union representative and was persuaded to stand for a council seat against a sitting Conservative councillor who had a massive majority - just to make up the numbers of Labour candidates. He was expected to have no chance of winning.

But in the weeks just before the election, his opponent was named as the correspondent in a messy divorce case. The election went to a recount and my father lost by seven votes, reducing a majority of thousands to seven. If he had been elected he would have had to resign from his paid employment, in the depresssed 1930s and bankrupted himself.
