Well, the answer is obvious: The Confederacy was an agrarian power fighting a conventional war against an industrial power, and the Yanks in the field outnumbered the Rebs two to one. No military genius could overcome those disadvantages.
Amazing the war dragged on as long as it did, really. Of course, Afghanistan was a completely different military situation.
