I don't think there ever was a ban on posting news items (as opposed to straight politics) on the GB, but it does seem to have evolved that way in practice.

the gb looks mostly pic threads and trolls, with the best threads by interesting people isolated like little islands of intellect
they changed the description of the political forum to include 'current events' around the time many of us were discussing covid. several threads that would normally live on the gb got moved here instead, and so it seems to have stuck as a thing.

It IS because of Iso Blurt posters.
It's their 'baaaah' pro-authoritarian attitude:

Similar to the NZ 'baaah' mentality.
Look where such attitudes brought both groups.

5 of the top 10 threads on the GB at the moment are (stolen?) picture threads.
It might have made more sense to keep the Politics, the GB lounge, and the GB together and put all the pictures on a separate thread. The rationale for that is that virtually every picture thread contains pirated material, but Laurel has housed it in an un-moderated thread.
If Butters wants to clean up the GB she could go through every picture thread and systematically report every one breaking the rules (all of 'em) Otherwise I suspect that Laurel will not be rushing to change.

The site, despite its rules, doesn't delete stolen photographs as far as I know from what I've reported. In fact, the site steals and reposts copyrighted images itself, which indicates it doesn't understand copyright law or doesn't care. The only time I've reported something and it disappeared was some time ago when a poster took my avatar and posted it in a derogatory manner. Those are my copyrighted book covers. The Web site was quick to take the steal down that time. Most of the avatars used on this Web site (including Laurel's) are stolen images, I'm quite sure. Mine aren't.
