David Frum: Texas abortion law will cost the GOP electorally

.
BabyBooBoo must not be watching the news.

The Texas "law" is all people are talking about, other than climate change disasters, and the spread of Covid from anti-vaxxers. Republicans efforts to suspend protections for renters and to cut unemployment assistance are also major topics right now. All those issues will remain in the spotlight through the midterms. Afghanistan ??? The Border??? Not so much.

👍👍👍

:D

So, Republicans on here, if your wife gets pregnant as a result of the gang rape in the state of Texas, what do you do? Keep the baby? This could be traumatic for the wife. Give the baby up for adoption? Having to care for a life until birth not yours that brought your wife distress (or not, depending on her proclivities) is acceptable?

Direct question. No answer is still an answer. Deflecting the question to something else is also an answer.

Appeals to fee fees aside the bottom line is the left lost the democracy game in Texas.

The polarization of the USA is very real.

So depending on who you are and where you live you might be living in the wrong state. Like conservatives in California and progressives in Texas...WRONG state!!! :D

And if you're living in the wrong state that means some rights that you care about are going to be shit on and rights you don't like are going to be elevated and there is NOTHING you can do about it. Democracy is a mother fucker sometimes isn't it...

If you are living in the wrong state, you have 3 real world options.

1) Accept the loss and life in a state where your politics are not the majority.

2) Become an activist and try to change your state, depending on the state this may or may not be a silly thing to do.

3) Put your money where you politics are at and move to a state more aligned with your political values.

I live somewhere else. Not Texas, thank goodness. Not California either.

I’m sure that’s true and will remain true in the media outlets you follow.

BoBo forgets the other option:

The Federal government says fuck that shit and overrules the states in situations where certain states are oppressing some of their citizens.

Ultimately the obviously unconstitutional Texas' "law" will be struck down by the Supreme Court, barring a seismic ruling that would precipitate a constitutional crisis.

BoBo's belief that a state (or states) can oppress a minority group with impunity was disproven over the decades since the civil war.

At the risk of upsetting the pro-abortion folks here, I’d leave the decision to my wife. I’m pretty sure the first thing she’d do is notify the police and seek medical attention. No doubt she would proactively monitor herself to determine if she was pregnant, and if she wanted to abort the child she would get it done ASAP.

I just used CA and TX as the primary examples as the are the largest and most obvious. It's happening in a lot of states though.

As the polarization continues more people are going to have to get honest about where they live and decide if they really want to be part of the community/state they're currently in or if it's time to start looking at one of the other 49 states to see if one is more to their liking.

I'm still trying to figure out what is wrong with being pro-abortion.

Besides that it makes conservatives hysterical.

I can't figure out how one can be pro-life and pro-death penalty.

Or pro-life and antivax. Or pro-life and not giving a shit what happens to the child after birth.

But then, these are Trumpettes we're talking about.

Not everyone has that sweet sweet welfare money from Uncle Sugar each month, and that limits their ability to relocate. Not everyone can be like you and tuck tail and slink out of areas where you failed to make it. Hell, most people have family around where they live...you didn't, so moving was relatively easy for you. Probably tough on your kids getting uprooted, but I'm sure you didn't give much of a shit about that.

The Texas law is clearly at odds with the precedent established by Casey ruling so my guess is that at some point, a plaintiff will emerge and the Texas law will wind up in a state court and get struck down. 30 counties in TX have passed similar laws since 2019 and most of us didn’t even know it.

IDK how SCOTUS will rule in the Mississippi case but odds are good that the abortion industry and fan base won’t be happy. Of course the states and/or Congress could pass legislation in response to a SCOTUS ruling. You seem to think laws in Texas or Mississippi apply to all 50 states. They don’t.

i wonder how this will affect couples/women who manage to afford to pay for ivf when it comes to the number of fertilised eggs implanted or those undergoing fertility treatment that means multiple eggs can be fertilised simultaneously?

it's not in the least uncommon for there to be anything up to 8 potential babies, and the option's suggested to remove the extras that might be weaker or stand a chance of being less developed so the woman is only carrying 2 or 3. It increases the chance of a live, full-term birth. It also likely reduces medical expenses they'd incur looking after the mother properly in the instance of a high multiple-birth scenario.

so if a woman's told she's now pregnant with a large number of embryos or foetuses, she'd need to travel out of state to have the reduction made. difficult for those on a tighter income, and for those wealthy people who want the procedure it's going to be downright inconvenient...not even just that they may have to use a different medical team than the one whose services they've trusted to date. that's not going to sit well with those used to being able to have what they want when they want it, including those who've had to endure all the indignities money-can't-spare-them involved with ivf.

What I see is people stop posting their lives on social media so much and keep quiet about their needs and what they do. Even what happens to them. Going to the police may not even be an option if they are keeping track of those with calls of being raped.

IVF couples will have to follow suit and do the same. Not everyone has it like that for a doctor to come to their home or go out of state. Even testing for how many you have will have to be kept secret.

I see HIPAA Laws butting heads with big government.

I was living in Brazil when they found the bones of Josef Megele in Embu', not far from where I lived. He had died a dew years before, drowning in the ocean. Naturally, there was a great deal of interest in the story, and the papers carried headlines nearly every day about the old Nazi psychopath.

One story i read, IIRC in O Estado de Sao Paulo, was that Mengele supported himself doing illicit abortions for cash. That struck me as superbly congruent with his wartime activities.

That said, I wondered if, had he been found alive, would the left have demanded a relaxed sentence for his years of service to civil rights?
