first lyft, then uber, set up funds to pay any possible legal fallout from texas law

Gonna be interesting to see what happens to them in California now that a judge has invalidated their Prop 22 voting measure...

 Are they planning for a scenario where they give a woman a ride to an abortion clinic? Could they actually be sued for that? Is the Texas law really that insane?!

can you elaborate on this for me? i'm not up with the prop 22 thing

I expect every rideshare operator who drives a 13-year-old rape victim to DFW Airport for an abortion in California to be charged along with the pilot of the plane. Amirite?

I swear conservatives don't conserve shit.

No, ride sharing companies are not subject to civil suits under the new TX law. Private lawsuits are not unprecedented, even with regard abortion. Local versions of the state law have been in effect in a number of counties in Texas for a while now. Rich Lowry wrote a thorough report on the legal strategy today that explains this. The law is brilliantly crafted which is why BlueAnon is having fits. Fun to read all the posts in this forum. God Bless Texas. ❤️

No. It’s still legal for women to go out of state abortions. Civil suits only apply to abortions in TX, and ride share services are not subject to suits in either case.

Yes, that is exactly what will happen. It will be tested and out into court ASAP.

Just like Rosa Parks wasn't the first attempt at riding in the front of the bus.

Pays to know our US History.

No worries. Ride sharing services are not subject to civil suits as explained in Rich Lowry’s excellent report today. 👍👍

“Any abortion provider who violates Senate Bill 8 can be sued by anyone (other than a state-government official or employee) and required to pay at least $10,000 for each illegal abortion performed, plus court costs and attorneys’ fees. Since anyone who aids or abets the abortion is equally liable, the administrative assistant can be sued, the landlord who rents the property can be sued, any vendor providing material support can be sued. (An Uber driver, the favorite hypothetical of the critics, wouldn’t be liable for innocently driving a woman to a clinic — the law says that one must knowingly engage in conduct that aids or abets an abortion to be held liable.)”

That's an odd exception -- you'd think they'd be the only ones who could sue.

It is a very deliberate exception. Read Lowry’s article. It explains why. Similar laws have already been implemented in 30 Texas counties since 2019. The law’s authors learned from past experience and came up with a bill that makes it tough to block. 👍👍

they're playing for a scenario where this will create good publicity so people will hopefully forget their companies are run by amoral cunts.

it was the proposition that basically said uber drivers don't deserve to be treated like people because that might make getting a ride a bit more expensive. it won by a massive, overwhelming majority. yay capitalism.
