No one old enough to remember 1996 is scared. That era's wingnuts were practically drooling at the prospect of a Dole/Powell ticket, never mind that Colin Powell supported abortion rights and affirmative action, both of which they of course hated. Unlike now, there were even polls in 1994 and 95 that showed Dole beating Clinton.

But a funny thing happened on the way to that November. Powell took himself out of the running, and Dole did get the nod but never even came close to leading in the polls again. That almost always happens with the media-anointed GOP frontrunner.

And that's not even touching on DeSpreader's rift with Trump. That's still probably the kiss of death in Republican primaries.
