August 6, 1965....the Voting Rights Act was signed, ending de jure racial discrimination in voting.

For 48 years, until the Supreme Court "legislated from the bench" to overturn it in 2013, the Voting Rights Act served as a firewall against the sort of shenanigans that conservatives are using today to limit minority turnout in federal elections.

All they have to do is show up...produce ID and vote!

It's harder to do well, just ANYTHING.

Have to produce ID to buy Smokes or Drink.

100% correct and in support of the reenstating of the 1965 Act or the new voling rights bill.

You have to show Id to get into a bar?

That's happened to me exactly once in the past 20 years, and I'm guessing FGB is probably quite a bit older than I am.

In other words, I doubt it.

Oh, and he forgot the part where immediately after that Supreme Court decision overturning part of the VRA, some Southern states immediately closed their DMV offices in a number of mostly Black counties. No one believes that is a coincidence. THe usual suspects will pretend to believe that or will just change the subject, but we all know why that happened.

Where does that bill stand, now? Have the Dems given up on it in the face of the threat of filibustering?

Every American should have the right to vole! Damned pestiferous field mice . . . Hunt 'em all down! Release the owls!

Or simply dismiss its relevance and importance.
