And after I finally had it accepted (kept getting rejected for "underage sex", even though there was nothing remotely underage) it was placed in incest. I had asked it to be placed in romance. There is a mention of incest to further the plot, but it is not the root of the story. It's not even graphically displayed.

So do I have to edit it to change the category? The last time something like this happened, I was able to get Laurel to fix via PM but she doesn't respond to my PM's anymore.

Does this happen often now?

Why the mention of incest? If it's not the theme of the story why is it mentioned at all?

If it is central to the plot you'll probably have to live with it, but if it's secondary, you could resubmit it as an Edit, explain your reasons, and ask Laurel to change the category. She might, but might not. Alternatively, edit out the reference completely and resubmit.

The protagonist's family has incestuous relationships. He runs off and later falls in love with a woman, but they are unable to have children. He contacts his father to donate sperm to a fertility clinic. That is the gist. The story has a very negative view of incest and is more about whether he can overlook his past for his wife.

If it is stuck in incest, it will get blown up with negative votes, but if I take out all mention of the incest, I might as well scrap the story.

I've seen numerous other stories here that mention things in a negative light and they are in the proper category. This would be like having a mention of rape in a romance or loving wives story but it gets shunted into non-consent.

Keep pushing to get it moved. It doesn't belong in incest, because incest has nothing to do with the erotic appeal of the story.

Getting a story put in the right category can be frustrating at times, but I think you should stick to your guns here and PM Laurel.

So the theme is there contextually to be overcome and rejected. Okay, got it. As Simon says, stick to your guns, explain why it's referenced more fully to Laurel (through the resubmit process so she sees it) - as you have done here. It does sound like a too simplistic, "File under I&T" categorisation, for sure.

Hopefully you can get it shifted before too much damage done - although if it's taken, "But that's not what I expected" hits from category readers, it might be better to take it down and resubmitted as another story - otherwise it will carry unwanted baggage.

I am hoping I turned off voting fast enough and I submitted a PM. If that fails I will have to submit an edit or something.

Another option is pull it and take it to another site that has an actual staff of editors, much more strict categories, and is run professionally bases on rules/standards that are adhered to consistently rather than one person 'screening' by whim with each story getting about 20 seconds of attention and chooses category because they saw one key word and assumed that was the entire story.

Want the name of the site send me a PM.

Granted it doesn't have the viewership lit does, but the story will be treated fairly and will be put in the proper category. You also won't deal with site suck ups telling you that you should shut up and put your head down because you have an issue with a story you're placing here for free that the site will profit from, and getting screwed and should accept it.

I submitted it for edit to change the category on the 7th, probably going to have ask for it to be removed at this rate, then submit it again.

Pulling it

Clicked on the link in help to remove the story. Hopefully the PM that gets sent from that will be more effective than my others. This entire experience has been a nightmare.
