Because it has a warm climate and no state income tax. Those are attractive points to retirees.

Well, the retirees, at any rate, do not bring many social problems with them. They almost never commit crimes, they don't have children needing public education, and they don't need jobs -- they create jobs, by spending their retirement pensions in Florida. From the POV of state government, they're an asset.

The story says, "Wildwood is northwest of Orlando, near the intersection of Interstate 75 and Florida's Turnpike." That means whoever is involved is more likely to be from an old Florida Cracker family than a post-WWII Yankee or Cuban immigrant family. IOW, it's not so much a Florida problem as a Southern problem. Plain ol' Southern-Gothic decadence, a problem from which today's diverse Florida is mostly but never entirely exempt.
