Opening up a marriage

I have an idea of a married couple who have been together about ten years. The husband periodically mentions bringing in someone else to spice things up. Of course in his mind it's another woman.

Later, for reasons, the wife finds herself opening up to the idea or is trying to shut her husband up and says she will if it's another man.

He agrees and they begin looking for a suitable third. As they get closer to finding the right guy, he begins to have second thoughts, but now she's completely into the idea.

I've been trying to write this, but it's just not going anywhere.

That's the basic concept of about 80% of the stories in LW and a good percentage in EC and Group.

I do have an outline for a chance I ever get around to try to write open marriage-to-polyamory story, and it's a bit different. (It's also possible I have posted this somewhere around here already)

Husband's (H) a little older but sexually experienced, the wife (W) not much younger, but was a wide eyed pure virgin when he somehow picked her up at the end of his bohemian period, perhaps she's what put that at end, even. They married fast, for some, perhaps external, reasons, not that long ago, two, four years max. Certainly, her perceived purity is why he had put her on a pedestal, and treat her as a princess. But she, she craves something more, not instead, in addition, much darker, rougher, but she doesn't even know it.

She becomes infatuated with a rough, rude man (R) whom she should have hated by her own assessment, but he's obviously interested in her, and her own desire in response is animalistic. She confesses of that to her husband. He demands to get to know the guy, and hate him too, but, after initial doubts give her the free pass anyway, if just an adventure is all she seeks, but with a warning it wouldn't last, shouldn't. She agrees, and reports back every step and detail, for great laughter about clumsiness of the savage, and it does in fact spice up their married sex as well, as the husband rams up competition, instinctively and consciously. She even has to put a stop to H getting rough himself, saying, effectively, let's not confuse roles just yet, you will get a shot at that after, but right now I need you as the safe cliff.

W feel a guilt though, and at least partially because that she suggests that H could help out her good friend (F) to get over a rough breakup by a couple of friendly dates, while she herself is busy with her little project with R. H says there's no need, and a little worries isn't that a beginning of an end, but he knows and likes F and she's obviously down, and W knows how to flatter to him being good at lifting women's mood. And, yeah, those friendly dates spark an unwanted mutual romance, both of them very aware how wrong it is, and F mind being blown by W being seemingly okay with it.

It doesn't however keep F out of H's marriage bed while W is away at R's place for another weekend. Then, W comes home right in the middle of the night, crying and with visible bruises and crawl in bed right between them. F want to leave, but W outright commands her to stay as she needs her too right now. And that sticks, F does move in, although she rationalize that being temporary out of convenience as she couldn't stay in her previous place (for some reason), only while she finds a new place, and meanwhile she can be there for W. And she is, to the point H jokes W invented the whole affair just to get F in bed for herself.

Meanwhile R is furious, and tries blackmail, and his mind is blown by H being aware of every intimate detail, been sanctioned it all and predicted the outcome in advance. They don't exactly become friends, far from it, but drink more than one beer together as H feel forced to deal with early onset of R"s depression. Eventually R goes away, quite literally on his next quasi-scientific adventure, solo hike over Greenland ice shield or alike. H wonder isn't it a thinly veiled suicide, W reassures him that guy had done such stunts before, is good at that and should be just fine.

While at home both girls are looking for new boyfriends, F because she thinks she must, W because she's now dreaming about trying double penetration, H has to go to a big conference or whatever alike. There, an exotic woman (E) catches his eye, and it's soon clear she's interested too. She's even unfazed when he says that he needs to call his two wives for permission (probably thinking he's bullshitting). He does just that right in her presence, for what W is entertained and even inviting E to visit sometime, but F is stunned H is even asking her, and that's when H finally confess his love to her.

(That may or may not be the end...)

what if they comprise and decide on finding a bi-sexual transwoman to include?

for many, it is actually a tough process of discussing it, seeking it out, then actually making it happen. I think the doubt, the second thoughts, the opening up to being excited about it can make for a great story if done right.

Do they start watching threesome porn together to entice them?
Do they ever consider another couple so they both can enjoy sex with another?
What do they do when they start searching and one finds a person enticing but the other doesn't?
What if they search and don't find another guy and give up on the idea, only the woman now has this fantasy of sleeping with another man - will she venture out on her own to fulfill her desire without her husband?
What happens if the husband discovers he has latent bi desires?

True, but most of those stories I've read just seem to be missing something. Not sure what it is, but there not quite the story I'm looking for and why I'm trying to write the story I want to read.

I like your idea. Hope you do write it.

I had considered something like that, but being a straight, white, male, I don't feel I could do such a character justice. If I could collaborate with a transwoman, then I'd be more comfortable giving it a shot.

Questions arise. What provoked the impetus for "spicing-up"? Are your bland couple still committed to each other? Are they willing to risk divorce as the cost of spice? IRL that's often the path to break-up, with an "open marriage" being more open for one than the other, but of course things go elsewise here in LIT fantasyland. Still, is the first to suggest "spicing-up" then the first to cheat? Do they try mate-swapping with trusted friends, and then more friends? Does the whole neighborhood get spicy?

EDIT: I glanced at the thread title with my glasses off and read it as OPENING UP A MANATEE. Assuming no butchery, and with talking manatees, there's a possible non-human trope here. How to spice-up the relationship? Fuck some lumpy mer-people. It's not cheating if your lover bears barnacles. But no tentacles.

Hell, I have a dozen or so of these types of stories, in LW and EC and Group.
