That's the thing that gets me, all this because of a conman.

It's not like the man did a damn thing for them, he looked down on them as suckers.

He wasn't worth losing their freedom, in the case of one of those morons, life.

They idolized him because they believed what he implicitly promised -- that he would restore things as they were in the 1950s and 1960s, when a white man, at any rate, with no more than a high-school education could earn a middle-class income from a blue-collar job. But that was possible only because of strong labor unions, and because every other industrial power that fought WWII was materially devastated by it and had not yet caught up, and because American manufacturers had not yet discovered outsourcing and offshoring.
