Outside Mississippi's only abortion clinic, a Black activist ensures women are not alone

JACKSON, Miss. — Asia Brown doesn't expect subtlety from the protesters who congregate outside the Jackson Women's Health Organization, always with the same goal in mind — to stop those heading inside from having abortions. She watched this year as a woman with a license plate for one of the state's public universities pulled up to the pink-hued facility, the sole abortion clinic in the state. One of the protesters, an older white man, yelled at the woman that she was "killing" a future recruit for the university's football team.

To Brown, it was as if the man had whittled down the worth of the Black woman he was chiding to one purpose — being a football player-producing "machine."

Black women are the heart and soul and backbone of all that is wonderful in this world and also in these movements towards social justice and support of women's rights. Kudos to her!

Black women are the Americans who have suffered the worst from our society's historical racism and sexism, that is all; it does not necessarily make them anything special.

Do you include the black women that perform genital mutilations on girls within their communities?

I'll give you time to try and think of a way to blame white people for this.

In which state is this happening? Vermont?

Lol, wut? How many bw have fought to make it illegal? You don't make a lick of sense.

He is white, dummy, go back to fapping to your femboi and incest threads.

Maybe someone can tell her about Maggie Sanger and what she thought of blacks.

That they needed to be eliminated.

Golly. Elimination, you say! That surely is an evil thought or saying, by gum!

Can you provide a citation where she actually said such? Such words would surely cement her notoriety into the annals of the most heinous of villains the world has ever known.

Did you know that Planned Parenthood, Maggie's organization, kills mostly black babies?

No, that's not what they do, Goodman Spencer.

y'see, killing babies would be classified as murder...and no such operation could exist in this country.

Kills babies? Doesn't even make sense.

You're just about to bump Klanguide off the number one spot for the dumbest poster on here.

You're not even a clever troll.

No, he cannot, because the truth is she was very explicitly AGAINST what he is claiming she supported. That lie has been debunked countless times, but haters gonna hate.

In the beginning, B-Spud was the ersatz post-Cheeto election fail replacement for Not-Vette and filled in those bowling shoes quite admirably until he temporarily ghosted. Coinky-dentally, as soon as he did that, Not-Vette poofed back in here like a genie-on-demand. Then after a spell, B-Spud returned, but since Not-Vette re-occupied his former space, B-Spud's routine was more like that an aloof understudy than of the gutty headliner he formerly shone in.

such is the life of a second-stringer schmuck! :D

Yeah, I was trying to goad homeboy into going harder in the paint with his yap and had a link at the ready to bitch slap with...but I think he realized his mouth's limitations to play it off wasn't giving any game and tucked when the getting was good.

sometimes, it truly is better to run away for another day! :)

Your statement is incorrect and not worth much of an answer.

That they needed to be eliminated. Did you know that Planned Parenthood, Maggie's organization, kills mostly black babies?

This right-wing talking point has been debunked again and again and again. It's not even close to being true.

In point of fact, Margaret Sanger’s clinics (which were initially founded in 1916) were aimed mainly at poor immigrant women from Europe. The first clinic was in a neighborhood populated largely by Italians and Eastern European Jews. Sanger did not open a Harlem clinic until the 1930s, even though infant mortality rates there were similar.

Furthermore, Margaret Sanger’s clinics did not ever provide abortions to the women that came to their clinics. Her clinics provided contraceptive medications, birth control devices such as diaphragms, and medical information on reproduction and birth control.

Abortion services were not offered by Planned Parenthood until 1970. Margaret Sanger was never a proponent of abortion and she died four years before Planned Parenthood ever offered abortion as an option to any of their patients.

Finally, if Planned Parenthood were a racist organization that was seeking to “control” the population of African Americans, you would expect that their clinics would all be located in black-majority neighborhoods. However, if you actually do a little research, you will find that 60% of Planned Parenthood clinics are located in white-majority neighborhoods!

Black women are the Americans who have suffered the worst from our society's historical racism and sexism, that is all; it does not necessarily make them anything special.

I'd say the black male. You emasculated him when you offered black women a check back in the 60s as part of the "war of poverty." A man needs to get up in the morning with a purpose. You take away that need to provide from a man and you destroy a big part of his identity. Then you threw him in jail.

Maggie Sanger is no friend to the black community!

Abortion: The overlooked tragedy for black Americans

"During February, which is Black History Month, it is a good time to look upon the triumphs and tragedies in African American history. Movies like Harriet tell of heroes of the Underground Railroad and the struggle against slavery. It is good to honor those stories. There is, however, one tragedy of the African American community that is often overlooked: the tragedy of legalized abortion.

Abortion impacts African Americans at a higher rate than any other population group. In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released an Abortion Surveillance Report. According to that report, black women make up 14 percent of the childbearing population. Yet, 36 percent of all abortions were obtained by black women. At a ratio of 474 abortions per 1,000 live births, black women have the highest ratio of any group in the country.

When you use those percentages, it indicates that of the over 44 million abortions since the 1973 Roe vs Wade Supreme Court ruling, 19 million black babies were aborted. African Americans are just under 13 percent of United States population.

White women are five times less likely to have an abortion than black women. Perhaps it is a matter of availability. A study by Protecting Black Lives, in 2012, found that 79 percent of Planned Parenthood’s surgical abortion facilities are located within walking distance of minority communities.

In the past, we criticized the tobacco industry for targeting young people with their advertising. Recently, the nicotine vape industry has been criticized for similar practices. The prevalence of abortion providers in African American and Hispanic neighborhoods indicates the abortion industry is targeting too. It smacks of the eugenics-linked past of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger and her views of contraception and abortion as ways of diminishing the black population.

The impacts on our black communities are hard to fathom. According to the Guttmacher Institute, which generally supports abortion, in 2011 360,000 black babies were aborted. CDC statistics for 2011 show that 287,072 black deaths occurred from all other causes excluding abortion. By these numbers, abortion is the leading cause of death among blacks."

"war of poverty."

Glad you put that in quotes, cuz it makes no sense whatsoever! :D

Margaret Sanger is no longer living and is therefore irrelevant.

If you care about Black communities (which you don't, but we'll humor your faux sensitivity here) then you need to stop reading guest opinions and elect people to office with policies that help support, enrich and cultivate Black communities. Which you won't do anyway, so...

An obscure rabble-rouser named Martin Luther King disagreed with you on that. But what would he know about the black community?

Abortion impacts African Americans at a higher rate than any other population group. In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released an Abortion Surveillance Report. According to that report, black women make up 14 percent of the childbearing population. Yet, 36 percent of all abortions were obtained by black women. At a ratio of 474 abortions per 1,000 live births, black women have the highest ratio of any group in the country.

I'd like to see how many of them had access to contraceptives that would have eliminated the demand for the abortions in the first place.

White women are five times less likely to have an abortion than black women.
Because they're more likely to have insurance that covers the Pill and other options.

Perhaps it is a matter of availability. A study by Protecting Black Lives, in 2012, found that 79 percent of Planned Parenthood’s surgical abortion facilities are located within walking distance of minority communities.

Ican'thelpit, have you ever been to a major city? "Within walking distance of minority communities" = IN WHITE NEIGHBORHOODS almost by definition. There are extremely few urban neighborhoods that are predominantly home to any ethnic group that aren't within walking distance of a neighborhood that's home to another group. And the folks who cooked up that statistic know it. By the way, I used to do clinic defense in DC and I remember Black patients who arrived by taxi and white ones who came on foot.

It smacks of the eugenics-linked past of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger and her views of contraception and abortion as ways of diminishing the black population.

That's been debunked twice in this thread alone. Grow up.
