Was it worth the negative comments?

Below is the link to my recent story that just got posted and I was hoping to get some feedback on it.

This is the first time in a while I wrote something without an editor. It was getting some good comments but then all of the sudden I got a barrage of negative comments, mostly from anonymous commenters, saying how horrible my grammar and spelling was.

I went through this story with a fine-tooth comb. I'm sure there were no misspellings, and I'm sure there are a few grammar errors (I admit I still need to work on that), but I'm not sure if it was worth all the negative comments.

I'm also thinking that was probably one person making those negative comments from the way there were clumped up in one timeframe.

Can some of you take a look and let me know if it was worth the negative comments, or if its just another case of someone out there just hating for no reason?

None of us are perfect.

I use editors/proofreaders on almost every story, but errors still sneak through.

So, sure, an edit would have helped, but that does not justify the negative comments. The writing did not get in the way of the story being readable and enjoyable.

Given that, I fail to see why the commentators do not accentuate the positives- the humour, the interesting characters, the desire to see a sequel...

I gave it a "5".

I don't have time for a close read, but I skimmed this one, and I didn't catch any spelling errors. There might be a couple that I missed, but not enough to make a fuss over.

The grammar does need a fair bit of work, in particular tenses. I'm not surprised you got comments about that, but it's still not an excuse for people to be rude.

Suggest you just delete the comments and move on. They don't have to be there for you to decide to take an extra hard look at the presentation in the future.

Different readers respond differently to grammar and spelling errors. It's not a matter of hate. Most of the comments on your story are positive, so that's something to feel good about.

The story does have some basic errors that will throw off some readers. The spelling is OK, but there's some awkward phrasing in places and the most obvious error is the random switching of tenses. Maintaining tense consistency is one of the things that should be on every author's editing checklist.

Don't be discouraged. Enjoy the positive feedback and learn from the negative.

Good story

In general, your story idea was a good one and your story flow also worked well. You did a nice job of building the fun relationship and playful nature of your characters. So, the story itself worked.

However, there are areas that you can improve upon in your next story. Most have been mentioned in previous comments, so I won't repeat them.

Keep writing and enjoy it, that's what matters most. Have fun!

My attitude is that - mirabile dictu - the comments on a story I wrote are the only place on all of Literotica that I can just delete something! On my own. Zap. Gone.

Not just that, but I can delete the fuck out of something I didn't write! (So damned right I put "wimp cuck shit" in LW.)

I found negative comments to fall into several categories, some useful, some not so. There is a difference between constructive criticism and outright stupidity, and a lot of negative comments fall in that range, especially the anonymous ones.

-Those who are the 'category police', who get upset for example if a story in loving wives has a gay couple or if it involves things like 3somes, bisex etc.

-Those who hate that type of story, like a cheating wife or interracial romance or a story where a couple with a cheating wife reconcile (interestingly, if the husband cheats, that is okay).

-Those who nitpick grammar and spelling, when someone has errors, and act like they paid to see the story. There are of course stories where they are so bad the person either didn't proofread it or for example, they might not be a native english speaker. These types are often nasty, when all you have to do is suggest they find an editor.

-You also get constructive ones, where people generally tell you why they don't like it, whether it is the dialog being hard to read, too long paragraphs (*ahem, yours truly*), or they find it just too unrealistic. Or if a story is too long and should be broken up, or the person writes chapters that are a page long.

The fact that they are anonymous tells you a lot, they want to hide. a lot of them have never written a story, probably couldn't, or if they do write stories they are afraid of people doing it to their stories what they do.

Best advice I got is from someone who often gets a lot of vitriol. Write what you like and with comments if something is vitriolic, if they say you should die you are a fag cuck, a socialist libtard, ignore it. I don't delete comments, if the idiots don't like it that is there problem, and if they want to call me names, be my guest and if they threaten me, well, I know someone who threatens me anonymously on an erotic fiction site is likely someone who I don't have to worry about, they obviously don't have much courage *shrug*.

From the rest of the comments, if it is very negative and they say why they don't like it, look at why and ask yourself if maybe they just don't like your vision (which is fine), or they don't like the way you portray the characters, if they say they are cardboard or lack emotion, that is valid, that could be you need to work on getting the emotions on the page. What I did with my first (and only story so far) was I read the comments and the ones that resonated with me I worked on, I appreciated those that liked it and with the ones that didn't or gave criticism, saw if what they wrote resonated and tried to apply it, if I didn't agree I appreciated that they gave me feedback..and with the idiots who blustered and screamed and threatened, I laughed.


Again, write what pleases you. Getting a 5 isn't really the goal, getting a story that some people seem to appreciate and read and that you enjoy writing and reading is the goal

Yeah, I don't know why I got upset by that. Some people are just trolls.
I got a negative comment on another recent story. I didn't think it was necessary but I'm not going to be upset about it, it's just one of those things.

Besides, I'm sure most of them are just trolls, usually by the same few people, who don't have anything better to do with their lives.

The comments belong to the author. Indeed, it's the only thing at the site that the author can simply delete (try deleting a story). If useless comments of the type you describe are there, it is because I am too lazy to delete them.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling are correct or they are not but the point is this isn't a professional site where people pay to read stories, and if a story has misspellings or lapses in grammar or you don't like the way someone uses commas it is okay to give feedback so they can learn, but some of the comments I have seen zero in on a relatively few issues instead of the story itself.
