Sprayed by a Skunk

Yeah, I've had to deal with dogs too and there are a couple of recipes,
none of which involve tomato juice and none of which do anything
other than to mitigate the worst of the smell...

Sounds like quite the smelly experience. What was it like? I'd love to hear more about it.

It was interesting. My in-law has a large garden and keeps the woodchucks in check with a live animal trap. On this occasion, a skunk got trapped. he called me and said he couldn't bring himself to get close, but didn't want it to die. I went over, thinking I could get a large cloth over the trap, and that should keep it form spraying. Good plan, except...

The trap was wedged in between corn stalks. Couldn't get the cloth to settle over the trap, and by then I had been sprayed. Sigh. Since I was already sprayed, I simply walked over to the trap, picked it up, and walked it to the edge of the woods, then released the critter. I do not find the spray that bad of a smell, myself, and since our nose gets used to a given smell after a bit, it didn't bother me too much.

After releasing the skunk, I walked back to where I had the mixture in a large pail.
Interestingly, as I did that I was stung by several wasps, whose nest was near the path I walked, and, I presume, smelling me thought they were under attack by a skunk.

After that added excitement, I undressed outside, sponged off, put my clothes in the bucket and sloshed them around. Then a shower, and put the clothes in the laundry. At that point, I was back top normal.

Further note: When I was young, and before I knew about this mixture, my dog would get sprayed from time to time. we tried tomato juice, shampoo, etc. Nothing did much, and he was kept in the garage until the odor was gone, usually several days. So I know form experience this formula works a lot better than those ideas.

Thank you for sharing this! I'm surprised the mixture worked so well and so quickly. How'd your in laws react to you getting skunked?

I volunteered to remove a skunk from an In-Laws garden. I got well sprayed in the process. But I came prepared with this formula:

And it works. No odor afterward.

Many years ago my brother got sprayed while walking on a semi-rural road. He went home, undressed and left his clothes outside and bathed using this formula. The skunk smell wasn't completely gone, but it was knocked back a lot. My brother, being at the time "drunk as a skunk", put on fresh clothes and went back out, heading to a local bar. He got about a thousand feet before he was sprayed again. He again went home, stripped outside and took a long bath in this formula. He fell asleep in the tub and didn't go back out that night. This formula works when used correctly.

Wow, skunked twice in one day? That's some bad luck. How'd everyone react to the smell?

Plenty of skunks, they are prolific.
Next time, just take the .22 to it.

Same for the freakin' raccoons.
If you let them loose, they return.

Possums? 'Nuff said. Disease carriers.

Chemistry

It's all about the chemistry. Both physical and chemical. The dish soap is a surfactant. It enables the mixture to "get between" hair and into the surface if the skin more easily. The baking soda creates effervescence within the mixture. And chemically the hydrogen peroxide (HO) is an accepter and attracts free oxygen molecules which are a part neutralizing the skunk spray.

I had a dog that was sprayed, point blank, and I spent the next 2 hours or so in the bathtub. This was the early 80s and "we" didn't know about the peroxide mix. I can tell you that it changed my olfactory sense for ever. A point blank skunk doesn't smell like one that just got run over or sprayed someone else's dog or cat. Now if I encounter that odor, I actually don't mind it at all.

I've heard that difference between point blank skunk odor and skunk odor from afar. Never smelled it up close, but I do like it from a distance.

They were happy to get it resolved. Everyone else stood up on an elevated deck at the house, about 75 yards away. At the first whiff, all raced back in the house.

After I had washed, and laundered my clothes, I was back in the house and no one could smell anything.

IDK. Had a neighbor who’s dog got sprayed. They tried all sorts of stuff. Poor dog they must of givin her 10 baths in two days. After all said and done she still had a faint smell for awhile.

I once knew this Dumb Fucker that used Skunk scent to cover his scent for Deer Hunting...

Yeah.

He rode in the back of the truck going home!

Took a couple of weeks to get the smell to go away.

Haven't hunted with "Stinky" in many years.
