Why do they read something they know they will hate?

So I recently received anonymous comments of several of my stories within a short amount of time. Judging by how the comments were written, I'm fairly sure it was the same person. They made it very clear they didn't like the kind of stories I write, which is fine. I have very niche tastes (sph and cuck stuff) and honestly I'm a very novice writer. I expect many people not to like them.

It just strikes me as totally crazy they would go on to read multiple stories of mine if they don’t like those kind of stories. They even commented on a story that was the last of a multi part series! Imagine reading a story with subject matter that does not appeal to you in any way... Then reading several sequels to it! I use tags to make the content quite clear and I’m being honest when I say I'm in no way a sophisticated writer, so it doesn’t take long for a reader to realize the sort of content to expect. Which means even if someone ignores tags it's not like they’ve invested much time by the time they’ve realized what kind of story they are reading. Why continue reading stuff you don’t like!? LOL

Obviously they had to have very strong feelings about the content to leave lengthy comments. I’ll add that I’ve seen this in the comments under stories by other authors as well. I really wish there was a better way to make the content clear, I’ve tried a disclaimer at the beginning, but somehow that seemed to encourage more attention from people who don't like the subject matter. Sorry for the rant, it just continues to boggle my mind that people don't simply stop reading stuff they don't like and search for a different story.

Maybe it's because they like to read folks gnashing their teeth over whatever they did.

I suppose this was in Loving Wives? Anyway, they read it because they hate it. Or, to be more precise, they get a thrill from criticizing it, or they secretly enjoy the "badness" of it, or of feeling superior, or something else along those lines. Nathanael West used the term "excited disgust" which I think perfectly captures the attitude of this person or persons.

A certain kind of person effectively gets off on kink-shaming. They're very eager to let you know in your comments that they disapprove of your kinks and are therefore Better People Than You. I suppose you can essentially view it as another variant of kink, in its own way.

That said: the best thing you can do for yourself is to disregard such people and delete their comments. There is a certain kind of Internet machismo that prides itself on never ignoring or blocking stuff like that. Just ignore it. Listen to legit criticism, but basically tell the people who show up to your story to tell you they don't like its underlying premise to just Fuck Off. You won't regret it, or at any rate, I never have.

As the saying goes, haters gonna hate. This has been true all over the internet since the first day people were allowed to make comments. And they love the fact that they can do this anonymously without repercussions because you will never know who they are. And in some cases like yours, they like to pick a target to go after.

Maybe they hate themselves or have some other problems in their lives that makes them want to lash out at others by demeaning them in order to feel better about themselves. Or they are sociopaths who get a thrill of trying to make you feel bad. Either way, it's best not to give them too much attention or else you'll just encourage them more.

Here's what you do, it's what I did, delete the comment. Do it enough times and they stop posting. Oh, also turn off anonymous comments. Yes, they may go create a alternate ID to comment, but after they see their comments being deleted almost a quick as they post them, they soon stop commenting.

You are correct that a disclaimer not only doesn't solve the issue of content, but makes matters worse by putting a bullseye on the story for the critics to notice and then froth over.

The one time (never again) that I put a disclaimer (long-winded message: 'this is not a cuckold story') on a LW series, it came in for twice the abuse that the original had. It really is quite unnerving as a writer, but unavoidably (and inexplicably) comes with the LW territory.

My guess? They live to hate. Much like the evangelist that ministers to the wicked and sinful ,they feel they are doing a service by reading and then denigrating those works they see as twisted and wrong. But don't try to devalue their kink. That's a recipe for unbridled rage. Personally, I believe those stories they spend so much time palavering about are a secret, repressed desire of theirs.

I'm going to disagree with others here in the sense I'll give the opposite advice.

I never delete a comment, and unlike what Cyrano thinks that's not a form of machismo, that's just his way of preemptively passing judgement on anyone who does the opposite of what he does, passive aggressive at its finest.

The reason I leave it there is two fold.

First, on a personal level, nothing they spew bothers me. Its a case of look at the source, they hate everything so they hate my story to. They don't know me, and never will, its noise.

On a more practical note you have to think like a troll in the sense of why do they spew hate on a story they chose to read? The first is as discussed by many, because they're haters, perhaps self haters, but haters. The other reason is for attention and to get a rise out of you.

When you delete their comment they think they got under your skin. A rational person would see it as you simply don't want the negativity on your story and to keep others from enduring it, but these are not rational people...delete their comment and they got you.

They double got you when you come here and start a thread about it. Granted again, rational people know you're asking a question or maybe venting a bit...but these are trolls.

Anyway, there is no right way across the board, just what's right for you. I'm just giving another angle on it.

I think those who delight in slamming the works of others with anonymous negative comments would certainly argue in favor of Lit. authors being intimidated not to just delete the comments.

People are free to do whatever pleases them, not us. We just render opinions and advice.
