I'm not sure if the OP is looking for purely physical scars to overlook, or maybe other things that perhaps some wouldn't typically get past when looking for a romantic partner.

For the life of me I can't remember the author or the title now, but it was highly ranked and perhaps it will ring a bell with others. I should have bookmarked it, but didn't.

The premise was a young boy became friends with a special needs girl, defending her from bullies and such from early childhood on. Then he goes away to college or perhaps the military and returns years later. She's grown up, just as he has. She's able to hold a job and get by quite well despite her limitations, but lives at home with her mother.

The main issue is she can't distinguish between people that are making fun of her or genuinely acting on her behalf and various dirt bags around town try to take advantage of her, until the hero stands up for her again, many years after the first time. It's beautifully written and definitely leans strongly toward the romance side.

That's probably more than enough to let you know if it's of potential interest and/or remind others of the story I'm failing to recall the authorship details on.

That was a very nice story series, covering issues having to do with physical disability in a beautiful way. I'm so glad you self-promoted it, or I might have never had a chance to read it.
