There's no doubt Rittenhouse put himself at the scene, but not the situation. He was there to provide first aid to protestors and others alike. From what I saw, one of the protestors, a belligerent asshole and convicted child molester, through that KR had doused a dumpster said belligerent asshole had torched (it was someone else dressed a bit like KR), and began to curse and chase Rittenhouse. That's when KR popped him, as the creep was assaulting him.

The second was another assailant who hit KR in the head with a skateboard, and was coming back to do it again, when he caught a round in the torso and went off to collapse and die.

The last tried to shoot KR with a pistol, but KR shot his arm off before he could.

KR wasn't looking for trouble, trouble came for him, and he handled himself admirably.
